Our man is in town. Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards, folk hero of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics has returned to the country that made his name. He is a VIP guest of the organisers of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and will carry the Olympic flame as one of the torch-bearers. The Games run from 12 to 28 February.
This report from The Canadian Press.

His trademark eye glasses are now gone following surgery and his prominent jaw has been reduced, but Edwards is still recognized and revered around the world. |
A failure of plastic surgery, then?
Any messages of solidarity for Eddie?

Amazed he hasn't been recruited as a commentator for Winter Olympics by the BBC and the rest. I'd love to hear his take on the skiing etc. What a personality.

Kudos to Eddie, especially now he's appearing alongside insurance spokesdog Churchill. Notice he's still wearing his Calgary'88 bib in that ad.

All respect to Eddie, I skied with him at Gloucester dry slope back in the 80's while I was taking the poma up he was running up the side of the slope for each run down. He was a very good skier and probs still is.

Fair play to him.
In my opinion he's a top bloke.
A few years back the wife for Christmas got me a Skiing lesson with Eddie at Tamworth snowdome. He was a really teacher for the couple of hours and a good laugh in the bar afterwards.

What a legend, my mates live out in Calgary and will delighted to hear that Iron Balls is back in the country. I suspect when they hear this they may be making a wee trip to Whistler

Top chap and what the sporting spirit seems to be about, and I'd guess a way better ski jumper than most of us snowheads!

As I understand it, he still holds the record for any UK ski jumper, so yes, better than any (current)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I worked with Eddie in one of the ski shows I used to do in the early 90's. He is a genuinely nice guy to be around. I also skied with him for a bit and he's pretty quick and fearless!
Calgary '88 was a memorable Olympics-not because Zurbriggen finally got revenge upon Muller after the '87 World Champioships at Crans Montana but because of Ernst Hackl's dominance of the luge and, more disturbingly, mens doubles luge. That brought a tear to the eye!

You know it makes sense.

Here's a fascinating little read about Eddie, by the man who says he broke the story that he would compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics:
Every Olympics needs an Eddie, by Adrian Warner

But it is the conversation in the toilet at the British Ski Federation that I will always remember. After we had finished the interview, I popped into the gents and I was washing my hands when Eddie walked in.
"Thanks for interviewing me, " he said. "What is Reuters, by the way?"
"Oh, our stories are published in newspapers around the world," I replied. "I will make you famous, mate." |
