Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski hero Eddie the Eagle returns to Canada, in run-up to 2010 Winter Olympics

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Our man is in town. Eddie 'the Eagle' Edwards, folk hero of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics has returned to the country that made his name. He is a VIP guest of the organisers of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and will carry the Olympic flame as one of the torch-bearers. The Games run from 12 to 28 February.

This report from The Canadian Press.

Quote:
His trademark eye glasses are now gone following surgery and his prominent jaw has been reduced, but Edwards is still recognized and revered around the world.

A failure of plastic surgery, then?

Any messages of solidarity for Eddie?

Amazed he hasn't been recruited as a commentator for Winter Olympics by the BBC and the rest. I'd love to hear his take on the skiing etc. What a personality.

Kudos to Eddie, especially now he's appearing alongside insurance spokesdog Churchill. Notice he's still wearing his Calgary'88 bib in that ad.

All respect to Eddie, I skied with him at Gloucester dry slope back in the 80's while I was taking the poma up he was running up the side of the slope for each run down. He was a very good skier and probs still is.

Fair play to him.

In my opinion he's a top bloke.

A few years back the wife for Christmas got me a Skiing lesson with Eddie at Tamworth snowdome. He was a really teacher for the couple of hours and a good laugh in the bar afterwards.

What a legend, my mates live out in Calgary and will delighted to hear that Iron Balls is back in the country. I suspect when they hear this they may be making a wee trip to Whistler

Top chap and what the sporting spirit seems to be about, and I'd guess a way better ski jumper than most of us snowheads!

As I understand it, he still holds the record for any UK ski jumper, so yes, better than any (current) snowHead

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I worked with Eddie in one of the ski shows I used to do in the early 90's. He is a genuinely nice guy to be around. I also skied with him for a bit and he's pretty quick and fearless!

Calgary '88 was a memorable Olympics-not because Zurbriggen finally got revenge upon Muller after the '87 World Champioships at Crans Montana but because of Ernst Hackl's dominance of the luge and, more disturbingly, mens doubles luge. That brought a tear to the eye!

livetoski, we probably met at Matson then as I was doing my instructor training with Alan Hole there! Toofy Grin Eddie was always in one of my classes. I can remember retiring to the clubhouse after the slope closed and listening to the thump, thump, thump as he continued to run up and down the slope. Alan was often out there to get him to go home as he wanted to close up. Oh the joys of Thursday evening club-nights!

I get really annoyed when people use him to make cheap shots. He developed into a damned fine skier and could have been in the Alpine squads, but his face and background just did not fit the "Hooray Henry" image at the time. Nor did his parents have the pre-requisite readies to pay his way into any of the squads. He worked his way up to the required standards, financing everything himself. He found an affordable way of achieving his ambition of taking part in a Winter Olympics and he did make the competition in the same way that the Jamaicans did in the bob-sleigh. Just a pity the Olympic ideals have been subsumed by the greed of Mammon! Sad

 You know it makes sense.

Here's a fascinating little read about Eddie, by the man who says he broke the story that he would compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics:

Every Olympics needs an Eddie, by Adrian Warner

Quote:
But it is the conversation in the toilet at the British Ski Federation that I will always remember. After we had finished the interview, I popped into the gents and I was washing my hands when Eddie walked in.

"Thanks for interviewing me, " he said. "What is Reuters, by the way?"

"Oh, our stories are published in newspapers around the world," I replied. "I will make you famous, mate."
