Poster: A snowHead

Dear Snowheads,
off to Chamonix this Sunday with Mrs Ed and kids (including youngest- breast feeding). We skied the Valle Blancje about 7 yrs ago- again when Mrs Ed breast feeding first child- then a yaer old- he stayed in crech.
Would it be OK to take our 9 month old darling in a backpack carrier and feed him just after the Geant Icefall? Do you think I should carry him down the arret or should the guide do this?

I hope you are joking.. I wouldn't ski down any piste with a baby in a backpack and certainly not the vallee blanche.

I would let the guide do it - he takes responsibility for the party after all!
I got into difficulty whilst carrying our 11 month in a back pack. We were skiing down the grand couloir so the best skier went down first and then I took the back pack off and slid it down - they caught it at the bottom. Wouldn't want precious to end up on the red below and get hit by a passing skier, heaven forbid! Baby seemed a bit upset by the ordeal so we had to stop at a bar - just the tinyest sip of vin chaud quietened it down nicely.

Hairybiker,
I think the grand couloir gets a bit mogulled for this type of thing and you can bump them around a bit. You'ld be better off taking them down something with fresh snow on it as its softer . Mus'nt forget the transceiver though in case you bury them.

T Bar,
That's exactly the problem I was having, the extra weight on my back was causing me problems through the moguls. You obviously have experience with dealing with the little angels yourself

Attach a coil of rope between you and the baby in the rucksack. If you feel yourself falling on one side of the arête, chuck the baby over the other side.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
