Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Southern French Alps desperate for snow

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
With a major French national race taking place in Les Arcs yesterday following its transfer from Pra-Loup, a quick look at conditions in the southern French Alps shows just how bad the situation remains in some areas. Into February, and still no base to speak of. A majority of runs are open - just about - but with the French school holidays fast approaching, without some heavy falls over the next week or so, rock skis are advised!

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Indeed - last night I met up with a friend who's just returned from a week in Serre Chevalier. He doesn't do off piste but still neeed the bases rebuilding as they'd been scraped by so many rocks. He was rather annoyed as all the reports were coming in of massive snowfalls further north!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

If you take a broad sample of winters I think it's true to say that the southern Alps suffer more snow droughts than the northern Alps, but you get winters where much of the snow comes up from the Med and dumps on the Milky Way, Val d'Aosta, southern French Alps etc. Again it proves the advantage of booking ski hols on the basis of what's actually on the ground before the money is committed - if one's in the fortunate position of being able to do that.

Pretty much the same story right down in Isola 2000...

ISOLA 2000

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I don't know what our depths are, but the pistes are OK from 2,600 down. The upper pistes have suffered not from lack of snow (although it's not a good year), but from the wind pushing it all off again! Sad

You probably have your ear closer to the ground than me but I understand that Pra Loup's snow making is out of action because it hasn't rained enough over the last few months to fill the reservoir. I always thought they used mains water when this happened but apparently not at Pra Loup - so the situation on the lower slopes is poorer than it need be.

No, didn't know that. I wondered why things were a little better at Ste Anne and Le Sauze (2 blacks and a red closed) ...

Most mains water is gravity fed, so it's hard to get a supply if you're at the top of the highest hill in the area Very Happy

Don't know what's happening in Serre Che, but unless they've had a sudden rethink, the snow depths have changed radically in the last 24 hours!! Now revised to:

SERRE CHEVALIER snow depths - top: 70 cms - resort: 20 cms
lifts open: 62/74 - runs open: 82/111 (greens: 23/23, blues: 28/30, reds: 27/43, blacks: 4/15)
