Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to ski from the 9/10th to 18/19th April

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

A friend and I are planning a trip somewhere the second Easter week, looks like there may be some snow and only need to take 4 days off work to get a long week in. If anyone wants to join us that would make driving economically sensible.

I am a pretty good skier, my mate has never been before. We are willing to go anywhere, I usually go to the states so I have rather little experience of the European resorts. I would love to go to Chamonix, and it does look from the rather far in advance forecasts that the French alps are a good bet for snow. We are looking at any accomodation as long as it is cheapish, a hostel would do us.

I have a petrol Vaxhall Vectra, not that great on petrol but should get us there and back.

Anyone what to join us, or just chip in with thoughts and recomendations?

Are they that poor? He is a complete begineer, so only really needs a gentle slope. If they are so poor as to be worth going somewhere else, any recomendations?

Perfectly good beginner and novice slopes at Le Tour. As you will have the car with you, it will be easy to drive up from Chamonix.

I learned on these no complaints. Whats snow like in Chamonix at moment? Brevent and Flegere get soft quick if I remember rightly. LeTour and Grand Montes were better in the afternoons I think.

Thing is, my mate cannot drive so I guess we shaould aim to staywhere there are easy slopes and I shall drive the the good ones. Is that realistic?

well, it's a bit of a hike. I agree Grand Massif would be better - particularly for you to ski round some of the higher runs, and hook up with your mate having lessons on the nursery slopes. We booked lessons for friends coming on Sunday - ski school VERY busy next week, so don't leave that too late.

hughbedo, LeTour, best beginner area, and Argentiere, where you'll wanna go, are beside each other so its not a big drive. There is a good shuttle bus in Chamonix too. So maybe try to find accomodation near either one. If he progresses quickly he will appreciate the good snow at Grand Montes too while this is the celebrated part of Chamonix it has some great blues and reds which I managed in my first week. Brevent and Flegere are lovely too if the snow holds up but they do face South!
BTW if he is getting lessons they usually meet in Chamonix town centre and take a skibus to wherever the instructor says. As an absolute beginner I used esf here had an instructor called Bernard who was superb. I dont know if the ski schools have other bases in the valley.
