Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

State-of-the-times snow-sliding kit seen on Hampstead Heath this afternoon

 Poster: A snowHead

Have just walked the entire length of Hampstead Heath and back, including its northern Extension. 15cm on upper slopes. Hundreds of people on Parliament Hill (over-rated and crowded). As well as the usual binbags, tin trays, snowboards, classic Davos-style wooden toboggan and man on touring skis:

- Estate Agent sign (plenty of redundant ones around at present)
- Upturned black recycling box lid (the variety with curved edges - quite promising)
- Ikea blue bag, with impromptu seat inside, being dragged along by an impressively committed Dad

Good plastic sleds were very scarce - showing how rare the event is. An Australian woman shouted "This has got to be a once-in-a-lifetime day!". Thrilling to see so many city kids enjoying what was surely a first for them - the chance to slide.

Any helmets in evidence, or was it a Goldsmith-approved devil-may-care woolly hat crowd?

Fertilizer bags were always the best, as I recall, more runs per bag before they tore.

My friends and I once went sledging on some bog-standard plastic things bought from the Esso and to our delight found, in some nearby woods, a discarded car bonnet.

It made the best and most dangerous sledge, that I have ever seen.

Cunners, plenty of helmets evident on the Heath's Vanilla Path at night time, perportedly! Laughing

Hey paulio, Another vote for the car bonnet. Ours was a light blue one from a Mk1 Ford Escort. Very fast (unlike the Ford Escort) but not much fun for anybody who got in our way halfway down the slope. Piste of choice was Farncombe Hill near Godalming.

Red Fiesta ours was, I think.

Wooburn Green golf course was our chosen run.

This thread put me in mind, once again, of one of Dave's yarns from the harsh Winter of '63.

I'm suprised at that. My children reported that the slopes of Savile Park (Halifax) were awash with them. Our garage holds two big plastic sleds and a number of those discs on a handle.

Nice story though, I presume the local council paid for your bus fare and hot bovril to do the report wink

paulio, that's such a terrible tragedy. My daughter went up on Dartmoor yesterday afternoon with some student friends for a slide and I got remotely worried.

On Hampstead Heath lots of kids were heading straight for trees.

Snow - and ice - have such effects on the human psyche and adrenaline. Walk on thin ice. Slide down snow on uncontrollable trays. People rarely appreciate how far and how fast they'll go. My godson had a nasty smash on a sled.

Not been sledging yet this year with the kids, best time sledging was in Meribel on a balcony curtain with a lod of drunk Germans!

I doubt any inquest nowadays would conclude with:

Quote:

But the inquest concluded that whatever was done in the way of improving warning signs there was no remedy against public stupidity. If water freezes over, people will pile on to it.
