Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Only 7 weeks until 9 ski days shared between the above ski areas (3 at Alta, 2 at each of the others).

Have I been taken in by the hype of the "Greatest Snow on Earth" marketing or should I really Shocked pack a snorkel for bottomless powder Very Happy ?

- Which resorts/runs for powder/bumps/steeps?

- Which restaurants and bars in Park City (our main base)?

- (And last but by no means least) How best to get a drink stronger than half a Kaliber shandy??

Plenty of threads about Utah on here, do a search.

Spent a winter living and working as a rep for Inghams in Park City.

Here's my season info

In the Park City 'valley' I thought Deer Valley was the best mountain, especially on a powder day. Then Park City. And last and certainly least The Canyons. I had a seasons pass for The Canyons and skied it twice. The lift system is a joke.

Alta and Snowbird are superb and if this is your first visit, then I would definitely vist them. You could do a day at each or combine them on a joint ticket. But I found that it was a circus there and didn't like the 'Oklahoma Land Rush' mentality.

I skied at Solitude and Brighton far more than I did at Alta & Snowbird. Cheaper and quieter with the same pow.

The real gems for me though were Snowbasin and Powder Mountain about an hour north from Park City.

So many good places to eat and drink in Park City and down at Kimball Junction (where the outlet shopping is).

Don't know if you'll be there for the Sundance Film Festival, but if you are queue up to try to get into a movie. Great vibe.

Drink sprits if you want strength. I recommend Gin & Ginger. Moe thirst quenching than a G&T.

*tick*. 8 weeks for us too. We're in Cottonwood Heights though, with vans to travel around. Powder Mountain was already on the list - are the $12 cat rides worth it, Mike?

Mike Pow,
Cheers for the link to the season blog - great stuff & now can't wait!! (Though we will hold you responsible if it doesn't dump snow morning, noon & night......!!)

And thanks to everyone else for the info so far Very Happy .

the "booze problem" in Utah is massively overstated. At worst, you'll have to fill out a form and pay a nominal fee to join the "club". Otherwise you just buy your beer like anywhere else - and they have very good local beers in Utah

Yes. For the skiing and for the experience.

You don't ride in the cat, you get towed behind.

mountainaddict,

The Wasatch Brew Pub at the top of the main street in Park City for beer.

I agree with Mike Pow, about Deer Valley: because it has this reputation for providing perfect grooming for the super-rich, people overlook some of the quite challenging terrain. Also, because it tends to attract people who stick to the groomers, it means the powder lasts longer when it gets a dump.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

mountainaddict, Why are you moving between places\? They're all so close that being based in one location and driving between is no problem. Anyway.

River Street Cafe in Deer Valley excellent.

Bumps in Deer Valley generally excellent. World Cup bump slope exceptional. HP in Deer Valley gets less skied out than elsewhere.

Solitude excellent.

Chimayo in Park City is fantastic if not inexpensive.

Used to be a tremendous bagel cafe on way out of Park City.

Drinking no issue. Beer restricted to 3.7% but local brews make up for it in taste (generally very hoppy). You can of course get wine and spirits. Bars that don't sell food generally sell you memberships. Generally members can "sign in" up to 10 people so you don't all need to join. Membership typically $5 per day or $10 per week. Work it out yourself.

On mountain food restricted. And involve much carbohydrate. Locals all go for lunch at the same time so exploit that. Bartenders on mountain will only sell you as many beers as there are adults at the bar. You can't buy the round for your chums without them being present Puzzled

Exactly!! Hence my query:

- Which restaurants and bars in Park City (our main base)?

We are more or less in one place - we're spending 6 nights in Park City, then - swayed by the glowing reports of a fellow snowHead and fellow mountain addict of quaint hotels and waking on the slopes - are spending 2 nights (3 ski days) at Alta (to ski there and Snowbird). The last night was also scheduled for Alta but we've changed it to a night at SLC airport as our flight home has been rescheduled to an early morning departure Sad .

We're not hiring a car: Shocked .....As all our Alps trips involve car hire and road tripping, l am looking forward to the treat of sitting back in a bus on this occasion - we won't need a car to get to the Canyons/Deer Valley (and Park City!!) ski areas from Park City and we're sorting transfers from PC to Alta and to/from the airport.

Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:
Fave runs:
- Canyons: the ridge under Super Condor (right side of piste map) -
- Canyons: ridges & routes under Dreamscape. plenty of 'back-country-esque' routes thro trees.... the Abyss is just that... the sort of place where compass is useful.... and it's all 'inbounds'.
but then, 9090 wasn't open...

powder _is_ very dry and fluffy... fully deserves the reputation.

bars - if the barman says "are you staying at the (insert name of hotel)", reply "yes, by jove, I am".... saves all that tiresome paying of membership fees... certainly worked at the 'irish' bar at the south end of main street.
oh, and if you go to the liquor store (5 minutes up from the transit/bus station) to buy your spirits, the deli on mainstreet will sell you mixers....

enjoy
