Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Won a raffle - WON SOME SKIS! Now need to choose them...

Hi

Basically won a raffle last night at the launch night for our Uni ski trip, for a pair of skis.

I have to specify what I want and they'll get me them, or a similar equivalent.

I'm a pretty decent skiier, have done a season as a technician, but really don't know a huge amount about skis. I'm looking for an all-mountain ski, probably with a 60-40 bias towards hard piste over powder, but want something that can do it all basically.

Last year I used a pair of what I thought were Rossignol B63, but I dont think they were called that now I've had a look on the web and cant find them. They were black with some white and yellow on them and I really liked them.

I have previously been a fan of K2s. Once tried some Salomon X-Wings and the set I tried I found too light.

Just done a quick look on the web, on Salomon, K2 and Rossignol's sites...

Found the following, as potential targets.

K2 - Raider 170
K2 - Sidewinder 170
Sal - XW Fury / XW Fury Z14 170
Ross - Zenith Z6 170

Any ideas on those skis, and indeed any other options hugely appreciated.
Cheers.

Bit more info...

My favourite things about skiing include...
- Bombing down freshly groomed pistes at the first lift of the day, so like straight line speed and ability to do quick short turns
- Daisy chaining
- The odd jump
- Cruising through powder.

Just done some more research, becoming tempted by the XW Tornado above the Fury.

charliew, awesome! Welcome to Snowheads.

What's your height / weight?

Actually I don't know that much about these sorts of skis, but someone will... As a young guy wanting 60/40 balance I would suggest a Volkl Mantra or a Bridge, k2 Extreme, Salomon Lord or Rossi S3 BC

All of these skis are much more versatile, more fun and will get you laid a much more than some of your suggestions...

Im 6ft and something like 75-80kg. Have always preferred a slightly shorter ski, so something 165-170 as opposed to 170-180.

charliew, I'm 6'1" and around 85kg at the moment, normally 80kg - hey I'm athletic OK? FWIW most of my skis are 190+

With twin tips they just sound long, makes for much better bar bragging rights. A super stiff piste ski sounds right for you around 170, but in a twin that would give you an effective edge of around a ski more like 160-163cm. If you go for something with a little more street cred and end up with a twin then you need to be something like 175-183cm.

What fun for you. I'd like to win some skis. snowHead

Get something unusual - have you considered Movement skis? I treated myself to some movement flames last season and they are *great* skis

And you can choose any pair of skis?

I can 100% recommend the suggestion nbt made, movement make fantastic skis.

nbt, not that unusual. Movement are among the top of freeride skis, but since their "narrow" (~80mm) waisted skis are still very good on hardpack, something in their lineup may very well please charliew.

Now if I wanted to do what he writes (And i happen to be pretty much exactly his dimensions)... And needed 1 ski to do it all... a 183 Spark will work for me... (And I also like my skis 'short' and agile). Despite its lenght is definetly easy to move that ski.

Trip is to Tignes

I've spent quite a bit of time on twin tips and I've really gone off them. I've never found a pair that I can have that much fun on piste with relative to a good carving ski. I tried the whole salomon range (thruster, foil, gun etc) and had fun, but the next few days after that went on some dynastar legend 8000 then some rossy bandits and just had a much better time of it.

ill have a look at these movements....

Ah nice. Thought you might be off to Val Thorens like it seems every other uni in the country is doing!

If you really like your speed on piste then I'd suggest getting something with a semi large radius, around 15-20+. I'd also suggest going longer as you'll have so much more stability, but I guess that's up to you. I have some Salomon Equipe SC that are 'built for speed', but I find that at any kind of real speed all they want to do is turn too sharply. Hence my Movements (Gladiators) I prefer to ski on piste, and when it comes to off piste they obviously are much more suitable than the Sallies. I do tend to recommend my Gladiators to everyone though as I believe they are a pretty damn good all round ski.

Salomon Tornados look very appealing. All the reviews im reading on the net emphasise the on piste abilities of the ski, with also an ability to go off piste, yet on the salomon website it seems to stress the opposite. hmmmmmmm

Best thing you could do is get involved with one of the many shops in Tignes and do as much testing as you can. Try different brands, something other than Salomon Wink

There is a shop in Tignes (Snowpark I think it's called) that sells lots of different gear. I know Precision Ski in Le Lac also sell quite a range, including Movement gear.

So if you can, get testing!

nbt, I bought my Sparks 3 seasons ago. Now it's like movement skis are all over the place! Although did only see 2 other pairs of Gladiators during my season in Tignes. Saw about a million pairs of Sparks mind. Mine have now given up after lots of weeks of abuse. Sad

Charliew, I can 100% guarantee u would love the Fischer Fuse 76. The revamped AMC 76 from last season, they get amazing write ups, ski like race skis on piste (i had a pair) but r capable of doing off piste (around 70/30 or 60/40 I can't remember). I know exactly what u want from a ski as I am the same. I kind of wanted twin tips for hitting park and powder, but NOTHING is as satisfying as tearing up a perfect piste throwing ur skis into turns and coming out like a slingshot faster on the other side. Check them out, I was surprised how many staff in the specialist ski shops own them themselves, and that is always a good sign. Hope this helps.

I've just reread what I've written and it seems like I work for Fischer! Just a cracking ski, I'm a seasonnaire too, and although most of my mates had twin tips, my skis shat all over them when it came to slalom courses or just generally mashing up the piste

'Twin tips' is such a crap label for skis. Yes they have tips at both ends, but the difference between models is huge. Some twins are shite, just as some slalom skis are equally shite.

Anyone else got views on the Fischers, they do look pretty good.

MOVEMENT
KAMASUTRA £399
This is movement's top park ski. They are responsive, smooth and like to be skied aggressively.

Advanced and expert freestylers, or heavier learners will get a lot of use out of these. Let's talk graphics.

Got a shortlist in front of me

Fischer Fuse 76 170
K2 Outlaw 170
K2 Xplorer 170
Movement Spark 173
Sal XW Tornado (Ti) 170

any thoughts?

X-Wing Torndado is a nice ski. I ended up buying the X-Wing Blast a couple of years back (which, I believe, is exactly the same except without the wood-core + it was cheaper).

I tested quite a few skis, and for me, the Tornado/Blast was by far the most fun and easiest to use.

It's also made my forays off-piste a whole lot easier and more enjoyable. However, if you think you're going to end-up doing loads and loads of off-piste, I guess a fatter ski might be better.

For your info, I'm about 5'11" and 85kg and have the 170cm - which seems to work fine for me.

charliew,

Rossi, Salomon, K2 all do good skis look on the snow& Rock and Ellis Brigham websites and pick a ski that gives you the 60/40% piste/off piste performance you want. They are all good nowadays. Only a real expert will notice the subtle difference between skis. There's just too much hype and ***** about.

Length wise should be between shoulder and head height.

If you haven't got a good pair boots ask them if you have boots they are more important when it comes to how well you ski and how enjoyable it is.
