Poster: A snowHead

Hi Everyone,
Can anyone tell me what the snow conditions are likely to be in Maria Alm in early January.
We have recently booked 2 weeks skiing for this period 2009 but are concerned it may be a bit early.
Thanks in advance

Davo73, Welcome to snowHeads.
If the weather before you arrive has been cold and snowy then the conditions will be good for skiing.
If it has been warm and dry then the conditions will be poor. Years of obsessively studying skiing weather have told me that it will be impossible to predict what the weather will be until about a week before the trip. Even a week will be a well based guess.

Ok, Thanks.
I guess it stems from from our last trip. We went to Bansko, Bulgaria for 2 weeks in Feb/March and to be honest, it was sunbathing weather. The snow was slow and slushy. As this was our first ever skiing trip, which was spoilt to some extent, I booked Maria Alm
hoping it will be much better.
I have checked previous years snowfall for maria Alm, but like you say, unpredictable.

Davo73, welcome to Snowheads.
In January it is more likely than not that you will have good conditions. The thing is that it is impossible to say more than that this far out. Maria Alm is part of the Ski Amade region (allbeit at one extreme of it) and so you have lots of choice to go at if the local slope is busy. At the other end of the Hochkonig region is a small ski hill called Hochkeil which is much higher and often has great conditions when lower places are suffering.
On the whole though, there is no way Jan is 'too early'. It's part of the main season and skiing in Austria started in October last year (but was struggling at Christmas the year before - go figure). The 07/08 season has seen widepsread reasonable conditions, even at low altitude, from November through to April. But who knows what next season will bring.
You will just have to join the rest of the snow dancers on here come winter!

and if it has been warm and wet conditions will be really horrible! If it has been cold and dry slopes with artificial snowmaking will be OK. There's a range of permutations. We're all desperate to know what it will be like in January 2009, and we're all going to have to wait!

Davo73, January - no worries, ski busses - your lift pass covers free bus rides, your lift pass is valid for all of Ski Amade so if you dont like Maria Alm - go and explore other places.
Have fun.
