jtobin03, Saalbach-Hinterglemm : Its one of the biggest resorts in Austria. Has legendary apres, probably on a par with Ischgl. I find the ski area a bit tame, but I'm sure there are loads of snowheads who would disagree with that. You definitely won't be doing anything stupid by going there. Have fun

jtobin03, I really enjoyed my trip to Saalbach. You can read my short review here
Any questions just ask...
Most people suggest Hinterglemm for straight off the slope action... then Saalbach for the night. I think Hinterglemm looked the nicer of the two resorts. A few photos of Hinterglemmhere

I would guess that Hinterglemm will be busy with school groups during 1/2 term week.

We were in Hinterglemm this year during half term. The previous two years we had been there in January. I was quite worried that it was going to be really busy but to be honest we didn't really find that it was that much busier than January. We stayed in the Ellmauhof - ski in ski out, but a bit of a walk if you want to go into Hinterglemm in the evening and a long uphill drive to walk up on the way back.

Thanks I know it might be busy but being a teacher I have to go at Half term, Hinterglemm was suggested over Saalbach. My next question is what is the transfer like from the nearest airport at half term, will I be stuck in a major jam the whole way.

The transfer shouldn't be too bad. Salzburg is the nearest airport, but Innsbruck and Munich are also doable. You can get a train direct to Zell am See and then a bus to Saalbach (I presume it also goes to Hinterglemm) if you want to avoid too much road.

jtobin03, if you can go Sunday to Sunday. The roads will be far emptier and you also get the bonus of skiing on transfer day (Saturday) where the slopes should be slightly less crowded...

jtobin03, we did Saalbach Feb half term this year, and whilst quite busy, it never felt really crowded (apart from in Bauers about 5pm!) I expected a nightmare transfer as well but we got to the resort from the airport in a shade under two hours avoiding the autobahn and going through Lofer.

The key here is to go to Zell am See station and not Saalbach (Maishofen) station. Very few buses go from the latter with none after 5pm and it's a long old (hitch)hike up to Hinterglemm as muggins here found out to his cost back at BUSC 2000

Did Hinterglemm about 6 years ago, apres ski is excellent until around 20:00hrs if I remember right then very quiet, the DIY holiday is hard work, from salzburg airport to Hinterglemm involved a bus to the town centre, then a train to Zell em Zee, then another bus from Zell em zee to Hinterglemm, my advice is drive yourself .............. oh and the skiing's not bad around 200km of slopes at all levels ............

jtobin03, We found the transfer a doddle. Got picked up by a private 8 seater minibus, airport to hotel, 1 ½ hours, in heavy snow! Just use the Salzburg airport website for a list of Taxis that run from there. Should cost you about 99 euro each way, so divided between 5 or 6 people (any more than that, luggage room is an issue) it works out quite reasonable. The resort is lovely, good apre ski, not as many shops and eating places as Saalbach, but better access to the slopes (especially the easier ones) which on the mountain, join the two resorts together. We found some reds quite challenging and many of the blues would have been red in the resort we normally go to!

There's no place on a par with Ischgl.

Is Ischgl becoming the new La Ros?

Hurtle, do you mean - a place where we advise other snowHeads to go so we can keep the good stuff for the rest of us?

Ischgl is just the best - keep it quiet though. Thankfully very few Brits (who tend to believe they are the only nation that skis). The lift system is superb, the pistes are great (nothing too difficult), there is a superb snowpark with carving zones, and the off-piste is superb down into Switzerland and around teh Idalp. The nightlife is legendary. The onlydrawback is that it is so popular amongst the Germanic races and Scandies that weekends are really difficult to come by and it is not a cheap resort. Piste wise it is Austria's largest ski area bigger that The St Anton Lech area and the Skiwelt. Also it does well for snow from mid December to May when it closes.
