Poster: A snowHead

Anyone any suggestions on what to look for when renting "Premium" skis? I took the plunge and bought boots this year and I want to match them up with a good set of skis. The only problem is, I haven't a clue what to look for when assesing skis and I don't want to get palmed of with whatever the shop has left in stock.
I'm off to Bad Gastein in 2 weeks so if anyone has any good (or bad) rental stories from this resort please enlighten me!

Thanks Kersh, that's great info.
I've been reading your posts and I'm getting pretty excited about going, Graukogel in particular sounds fantastic. Is it fairly easy to get to or is it a bit of a camel trek away? I'm staying at the Barenhoff but I can find no information on it on these forums.

Ardsian, Graukogel is great if you like it steep. This year is the 50th anniversary of the old Rennstrecke. It's a former world cup ski run, now the blacks on Graukogel. I've skiied there a few times and I love it.
I'm not sure where the Barenhoff is. Do you have the address?
Graukogel’s easy to get to. You can take the bus from the Stubnerkogel Bahn/ Railway Station. The ski bus timetables are at :

I'd recommend a trip up to Sportgastein too. It's great for carving up there!!!!
Cheers

The Barenoff adreess is
Gesundheitszentrum Johannesbad GmbH
A - 5640 Bad Gastein
Pyrkershöhenstraße 11
The blurb says it is only 5 minutes from the main lift, I was just hoping it wasn't 5 minures vertical!

Ian, ah ok. I know where that it is, it's over the road and up a bit from the railway station. There is a bit of vertical but not much and 5 mintues is about right to the lift.
I'd take the bus to Graukogel if you go there. You can probably see the Graukogel lift from the Barenhoff but i'd still bus it. The bus goes from outside the railway station towards the Gruner Baum about ever 30 mins.
Boyler, I've never bought boots in Bad Gastein so I can't really help. A friend of mine use to work in Alpi Sport but has now set up his own ski shop in Bad Hofgastein called 47 Degrees North. He's set up this shop to sell high end ski equipment but I don't know if he's got any good boot fitters. The chap who looks after my apartment has lived in the valley for years so i'll ask him if he knows someone/somewhere.
Cheers

Boyler, quick chat with the chap who looks after my apartment - he says go to Top Rent Schober by the main lift. Apparently the local ski guides go there to get their boots fitted. You may want to contact them before you go to see if you can make an appointment?
Cheers and have fun!
