Poster: A snowHead

The news is good for European resorts with the early snow holding up well against the expected higher temperatures. Last year's cynicism is slowly dissolving and people are almost willing to believe that the recent snows are going to stick around and this really is the start of the season - if so, it looks like we've got an excellent early base across much of the Alpes. Another storm and colder temperatures on their way, with Austria due to get the best of it again whilst Switzerland and France are expected to get their share later in the week. Scotland has also enjoyed good early season snowfalls.
Most Canadian resorts seem OK and the US East Coast is doing better than last year. But, in parts of North America outside Colorado, resorts who are usually very vocal about their conditions are noticabley tight lipped as the start to their season is developing at a somewhat slower pace. Some made quite a noise about a heavy fall a few weeks ago, but that's mostly gone now. However temperatures are reported as having dropped, allowing snowmaking to commence in the resorts that do not have natural snow yet...
Pistehors reports many French resorts as being open early and reports of good skiing are coming in from lucky snowHeads based in Montgenevre, Tignes, Avoriaz, and Chamonix. Val Thorens and Puy St Vincent are also reported as being open by snow-forecast.com although we wait with baited breath for on the spot reports and pictures...
In Austria conditions are reported by snow-forecast.com as being the "best start to a season for 30-50 years", hyperbole perhaps, but with a definite ring of truth according to threads on Saalbach, the Arlberg, Schladming, Zell am See, and some fantastic pictures from Tauplitz. Many other Austrian resorts have opened earlier than planned for weekend skiing, including Mayrhofen and Obergurgl, and quite a few of the glaciers now have skiing down to resort level.
Switzerland is also reporting a bumper start to the season, with good news from snowHeads in Saas Fee, and Laax. Many other Swiss resorts including Davos, Klosters, and Andermatt have limited opening at weekends, whilst Verbier and Engelberg have now started their winter season in earnest according to snow-forecast.com.
In a case of deja vu Whistler already has a base of 95cms, with Kicking Horse not far behind on 92cms. Silver Star and Fernie are not yet open for alpine skiing, although they have had a smattering of snow in a recent storm. In the USA, Colorado has received some snow, although many other American resorts are apparently having to rely on artificial snowmaking. No pictures or links to threads for North America, as far as we know no snowHead has made it out that far and reported back yet? Anyone who does, please PM the weatherHead.
Meanwhile in a PM to the weatherHead Mike Pow reports 65 cm of "light and dry powder" in Niseko, Japan, lucky snowHead!
If you have a particular favourite resort that you feel that we've missed out, or some nice pictures for us to put on the snowHeads front page, or you just plain feel that we've got it wrong, then please, start a thread, post some pictures, and drop me a line about it.
