Most PMR446 radios have a claimed 5km range (inc. those above), but some such as these claim 8km. Is the increase real, despite the fact that hills etc getin the way?
Also, seen some 5km Motorola's in Decathlon which are about half the size of typical radios, what would be the disadvantage to these? Battery life, range ? ??
Thanks.

Novice question - would these walkie talkies work with other brands?

All PMR446 are compatible. I currently have a pair or Binatone ones but the power supply / charge is now damaged so looking for replacements. I've used mine to talk to friends with Motorola and Oregon units no problem.

Usability if you're taking them skiing.

They work, but not legally. US allocates different frequencies to these type of radio compared to Europe. I've never heard of anyone getting into trouble for using unlicensed radios, but I suppose it could happen.

That's a bonus, they're smaller, lighter, easier to carry. Even with the larger ones I have to use them with gloves off so that makes no difference, just more chance of dropping them off the chair.
If there's no performance loss in terms of signal or battery then I might give them a try, a pair for £29.99
