Das nun insgesamt kühlere Temperaturniveau kann sich behaupten. Am Sonntag trifft im Tagesverlauf eine Kaltfront ein, nächste Woche wird es neuerlich eisig kalt.
Another Cold Front coming in on sunday and more snow continuing through all of Monday (not mentioned above)
The ski season 2007/08 will start on the 30th of November 2007!
Because of the excellent snow conditions there are open from Friday, November 30th, 2007 on: lifts and pists in the area Galzig/Arlenmähder, St. Christoph and Gampen/Nasserein, Kapall.
Also the lifts will be open in in Stuben as well as Lech and Zürs.
The lifts up to the Rendl will start December 20th, 2007

stanton and others,
Driving up to Ischgl next Friday (from Zurich), how much snow would need to fall to make the journey tricky (9 seater minibus!)? It's mainly motorway and from memory the road up to Ischgl is fairly good and should be kept clear ?
It is going to dump it down during next week then clear up on Friday for the weekend isn't it ?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Reason for the question, should we hire snow chains with the car or rely purely on the winter tyres ?

stanton, have you noticed the absence of people castigating you this year because you're giving us the news we want to hear?! Good work, old chap.
masmith, you really can't say. It depends on a few variables, not just how much snow there is. Personally, on major roads I'd bank on the winter tyres being sufficient, as the ploughs ought to be working flat out to keep the roads open, although obviously if it snows really really hard then it can beat the ploughs for a few hours. Ring up Ischgl tourist office before you leave and get an update on conditions.

well it rained at the St Anton village (1300 m) all Sunday night, but snowed from about 1400, then at about 6 am it started snowing everywhere and it has not stopped yet as of 4.15 local time. Very windy and mosts lifts had stopped except a few from the village up to the first station. Serious white-outs up top - I got caught in one and could not workout up, down or even see the piste markers, all made more difficult by the big drifts caused by the driving wind. Clearing up a bit now so looks good for tomorrow

Rain at town level is not unusual at all during the day any time during the season.

a lot warmer today, pistes very soft and even a bit slushy back to resort, snow now melting on the roads to slush. It has been blue sky with sporadic very low clouds (at Galzig-Gampon) and it has been trying to snow.

Die Schneefallgrenze schwankt dabei immer wieder zwischen 2000m und dem Tal herunten
Yes the freeze level has temporary gone to 2000M.
However, its changing again (freezing level dropping) . Its going to start snowing again Saturday & will be getting much colder next week

I think we can expect another 40-50cm out of the next storm

Whitegold, Val d'isere had around 50cms earlier this week, reduced to 25cm with a day by the high altitude winds - so mid-altitude Lech should hold it's snow better.

A man was killed in an avalanche here in Lech yesterday. At 15.45 he skied into a closed touring route going from the Kriegerhorn down to Steinmähder. He wasn't wearing a transponder. My son's ski teacher took part in the search, which went on for over an hour. They were stamping around in thigh deep powder in almost total darkness in the end! The dogs found him, but after an hour under the snow he was already dead.
I had been standing down at Steinmäder earlier on in the day watching people ski into that slope, and also watching the ski patrol catch the people at the bottom and send them back up the piste on foot! Crazy. There was so much skiable terrain here, why do they have to ski slopes that are closed for avalanche danger? Simply Crazy!

Seeing the huge drifts and overhangs from the lifts which you would not see from the ground warrant serious respect to the mountains. Sad for the guys family
