I hope to bring my 15 year old paraplegic son skiing for the first time in Italy(livigno). I have contacted all the local schools and although they can offer him tuition they dont have any equipment. Can anybody tell me where I can rent borrow or steal the necessary equipment for a wheelchair user on his first ski trip.

well it is probably not super helpful to you but you can try this link
http://www.disabledwintersport.com.au/Pages/About.htm
they have connections with Steve Bova in Kimberly canada and a few other places and may know where you can get stuff in europe..
or email this guy(ronnie finneran) finsko@bigpond.net.au as he is an ex-paralympian and big organiser in disabled skiing in Oz...
If you think of taking him to australia to ski download their forms.... with the appropriate certification they will provide equipment at the ski resort and lift tickets are 50% discounted and free for his "guide" and lessons also 50% discounted.... also they run camps for groups... they have a ski lodge set up for disabled skiers available at reasonable rates too...
Good luck - I loved Livigno and the ski school Inverno Estate was particularly helpful when I was there... (say hi to dario, christiano and lorenzo if you are talking to them) However i need no specialised equipment only empathetic instruction from those who can think outside the square. They were great at finding me just the right instructors for the purpose!

donzo112, I don't know where you are based but if you click on my first link you will find some regional centres together with contact numbers. These are affiliated to dry slopes.

Had another thought, the Winter Paralymics followed the able bodied to Turin this year, might be worth trying the tourist offices of the venues, Sestriere, Sauze d'Oulx, Cesana etc.

Oh I forgot...
Canada has a big disabled program it seems... hence the comment about Steve Bova who coaches/trains for DWA people there...
Also from memory Whistler has "revamped" its disabled program stuff.... (thankyou nice PR lady at Whistler)
you could contact them if you are ever interested in skiing there and they should be quite helpful....
I have found Challenge Aspen to be helpful and friendly too.... and they have a great rate re equipment, lessons and lift tickets...
so there you are - once he is hooked you can ski around the world with him!

yeah that is why I suggested Ronnie finneran... I thought he might know who they spoke to when organising training facilities etc before the games....

donzo112, I know its no help but we have had some excellent experiences in France with a friends son who has cerebral palsy. Whenever I see any disabled skier on the mountain I am touched my the eagerness of everyone to help and the consideration given. I am even more touched by the bravery and drive of the skiers.
CEM, has summed up the 2 main options very well. Please let us know how you get on.

I live in ireland so this makes it a little more difficult to access the slopes in the uk. we have one dry slope in Ireland but it is inaccessable at the moment. I hope to do a d.i.y. package as the trips organised through these groups are quite expensive ( £1100- £13350ex uk)

donzo112, you will see that the Northern Ireland contact for BSCD is Mal Neumann 028406 23834 (email mal2@tescol.net) and for the Republic the contacts are Andrew & Clodagh Semple 00353 18338610 (email asemple@crc.ie.)
I am sure that they would be happy to offer advice/help over the phone or by email.
We (or my daughter) is involved in the BSCD near us at Aldershot.

2006 DWA Camps and Cost
You are invited to apply for Disabled WinterSport Australia’s 2006 Alpine Ski Camps:
Camp 1: 2nd-7th July 2006 DWA JNR Development camp(by invitatation)
Camp 2: 9th-14th July 2006 DWA ski camp

Camp 5 27th-1st Aug/Sept 2006 DWA ski camp
Camp 6 10th-15th Sept 2006 DWA ski camp
DWA reserve the right to screen all applications. Although DWA endeavours to accommodate for large range of people with disabilities on these camps, limitations in resources and equipment may restrict the number of participants that can be provided for.
The camp cost of $650 per person includes:
5 nights shared accommodation in Finsko’s Lodge (linen hire included)
5 days breakfast & dinner, 4 days lunch
4 days ski hire (ski clothing will need to be hired separately)
4 days Lift and Lessons
Transport to and from Thredbo/Perisher?each day
too late for this year but that would be a smallish cost in GBP .... flights would cost a bit though...

A bit tenuous this, but it may be of help.
The owner of Snow & Rock is paraplegic - following an off-piste skiing accident. Snow & Rock are consequently big supporters of disabled skiing and (certainly used to) run a scheme to rent out disabled skiing equipment at sub-commercial rates.
The only thing I can find on their web site, though, is a link to www.backuptrust.org.uk
A call to their PR people in head office might be worth a punt.

donzo - have a look on the links on that Oz site.... there is a link to Steve Bovas camps in Kimberly.... I'd try emailing steve... he may have contacts in Italy to get you sorted out....
Else email Ronnie Finneran - again likely to have contacts...
If you cannot find equipment through those two get back to me and i will try asking a few folks...

If you have to go elsewhere I can say that Challenge Aspen are a cool mob - helped out with advice when i started skiing... and the guys in Whistler would be good i think - never used but have chatted to them.... Steve Bova may have ideas for beginners elsewhere in Canada - and he is a SUPERB race coach for disabled if the rants he gets in Oz are anything to go by....

am I a disabled skier? well according to certain snowheads - no I'm not "really disabled" because I can go places on skis.. not be stuck in one spot! (although I did try to explain that a certain M Milton goes places really fast on ski and is still a registered disabled skier)
what do I believe/have been told
yes - neurological deficit... (I don't have brain! ... nah truely I am a registered disabled skier - but I have an unusual disability that tends to be awkward to understand/explain as not readily visible - although those with experience pick up my movement patterns stright up when i attempt things i am "untrained" at)

Hope steve or Ronnie come through.... would be nice to go ski with everyone else... Livigno is lovely... I love the people....

Last winter I shared the “snowy owl” chairlift at the Lecht with a one legged skier. Was chatting to him on the way up and he had never skied before he lost his leg but was now a season ticket holder! I turned left at the top and he right. When we got to the bottom he was on the chair in front of me

II - check this out
http://www.michaelmilton.com/
check the guys current records for speed skiing.... (he holds the WORLD record for diasbled skier and the AUSTRALIAN record for speed skiing by anyone).... and he only just took up speed skiing...
then check his medal etc history - including taking out all gold medals in his category in Salt Lake.... then check right back through his history on all his competition history...
he also rollerblades on 1 leg (his sisters shop taught me to skate... when I asked them they went "hey you have 2 legs - should be doable")

Last season I was sat having a coffee at Linderats, just below Avoriaz.
An instructor walked in carrying a leg, a boot and ski. He sat down and bought two coffees.
Five minutes later a skier arrived, who from the flapping leg of his salopettes, was obviously missing that leg. As he hopped past he turned to us and said "Lost it on a red. Literally!".
It turns out that the leg had come off and, because the boot was in the binding, the ski just ran off down the hill sans skier...
Even later it turned out that the instructor in question, himself, is on prosthetic limbs
donzo112 - you might try the guy referenced on here. There's also an adapted chalet here.
Erna Low are also supposed to be very good for adaptive skiing.

beside making that trip to North America or Oz... sorry I'm no help....
It is all very organised back home.... I simply book the lesson... any equipment required is owned by the national body but kept in the ski schools around teh country... so they get out and outfit the required stuff.... there is a disabled coordinator person at each resort.... and many dual qualified instructors...
But we have no special ski schools etc - we are fully integrated with the able bodied system... I regularly ride the lift with a sit-skier... (He knows instructor and I will not give him grief as we can unload OK)... He skis solo always - having a little hydraulic system to lift him onto the chairlift... He is one of the best skiers on our hill (well MM is probably but...)
There are special camps run by the national body for trying stuff out as well...
I have found it more difficult overseas... less seamless and far more difficult to access when you need to find all the separate people/places each time.... but I can cope fine with just a decent instructor - no special equipment for me...
I think I prefer the integrated approach though....
sorry I'm no help.... are you still just hunting equipment?
hmmm - just thought.... the disabled coordinator at Falls Creek was an Italian..... (don't know if he is still there)...
you could try emailing and see if he is

Right... I have a couple of folks scratching heads atm....
Most of us folks have what equipment we need... as I said it is provided free of charge at home... so they are hunting instructors etc from Italy atm who may know...
I had another idea....
Thredbo has ski patrol bunch that do Italy/Oz back to backs.... (italian descent aussies)
you could try them on this website - see if they have anyone there that works italian seasons and can assist (I am pretty sure he is pro patrol but they should know who... my friend from patrol is off overseas)

Just spoke to Falls Creek... they no longer have the Italian... now a czech guy runs the disabled skiing
I'm still working on the other leads....
Can you try the thredbo one see if the patrollers come through....(I don't have any personal contacts there any more... if you find the italian patroller tell him I'm the girl fed my instructor a picnic and him a snack down at Dead Horse Gap... )
