As a single 32 year old bloke living in Bourg I would say not bourg for social life. It's a dead town sadly and not really getting better.
However I do have fibre internet and can walk to the funicular in 5 mins. So I could be skiing within 30 mins of leaving home.
Morzine has some good co working spaces as does Chamonix, so easy to meet people. Not sure if Tignes does, but I think Tignes would be a great spot.

@caitfm92, This potentially meets your criteria (except it's not in France): https://alpiness-coliving.com. There is a coliving in Briancon also but you can't bring your dog to it. I've stayed in Briancon for the last 3 winters and for me it ticks a lot of boxes as a remote worker. I've heard good things about Alpiness and they definitely take dogs, I'm assuming it's also a French speaking region of Switzerland.

I understand why this suggestion might get a lot of "meh, not for me" comments, but for the last 2 seasons, we've lived in Menthon St Bernard - close to Annecy.
• For a quick morning or afternoon ski, I go to La Clusaz (25 minutes door to door)- while not the best resort in the world, it does have some incredible steeps and offers some fantastic and very technical runs.
• Annecy, a medium sized city, is just 15 minutes away, and offers tons of stimulation
• GVA in less than an hour.
We skied Tignes last Mon-Thurs and it was amazing... just under 2 hours away. 3 Valleys in 1hr40 - Plenty of skiing within a 2 hour drive (ok, not ideal.... but living here for an entire season, it's been great for us to explore the region without being locked into 1 resort/location)
• Also, Lake Annecy is really a summer destination, so with a little effort/luck, you can pick up a winter stay for a reasonable price.
As you probably already know, you'll have to prioritize: location, ease/access to slopes, civilization/city, mod cons etc... I wish we could have it all, but I haven't found that place... for me, anyway, I really like East side of Lake Annecy - best of luck - please let us know what you decide on.

@US_EU, lovely. That would be right up my street. Granted I'm an inveterate townie, but I can't think of any ski resort which isn't paralysingly boring, unless all you want to do is ski and talk about skiing. (Runs to hide.)

@US_EU, that sounds great. Do you take a car or get a long hire (or do it by public transport?)
@Hurtle, you're not wrong. Our best long stays have been in towns rather than resort, Aosta stands out. Access to a decent supermarket helps! Though Kitzbuhel worked very well for a bit of both, when it's not super busy it has a decent local feel.

@ElzP, We have a car.. I'm too old, (and American ), to take the bus... We also have 2 boys who attend the local lycees... (sixieme and CM2) so public trans just wouldn't work for us (me). It took a bit of planning and a lot of support and understanding from my wife... but for the winter quarter in France, it's been really rewarding for us.

I love Menthon St Bernard. It depends (rather obvious, but true....). I would struggle to get bored somewhere with a beautiful outlook. Somewhere you can just sit and be inspired with what's out there. That doesn't have to be mountains, but mountains speak to me. An urban outlook can be inspiring too, though most aren't! And the outlook from and immediate surroundings of some ski-resort accommodation are frankly dreary. Our apartment had a stunning view, 365 days a year, regardless of the season. Just watching the clouds come and go, or the setting sun lighting up different facets of the mountain opposite minute by minute, or even the rain or snow falling, was a good way to spend some time. Lovely walks just out the door. I was fine for some weeks there, on my own, with broken pelvis and far too scared and inept on crutches to contemplate going out into the deep snow and slippery paths. If I was working several hours a day, had a beautiful outlook, plenty to read and internet access I'd be quite happy to have to get in a car for "urban entertainment". As for skiing, it's great to be able to go out then decide after a few runs that the snow and the weather are less than inspiring and be home in the twinkling of an eye. Or just set off for a "short ski" like you would for a "short walk". Doesn't have to be an epic.

Yep. We spent four months a year there, though never did a solid season as we cleared out for the 4 weeks of lift queues in the "vacances scolaires". With a car and access to other stuff, no problem at all. We enjoyed having people come and stay though, and socialising with neighbouring apartments. And if we were REALLY needing to get out the "Troc" in Albertville, coupled with a big supermarket shop and a potter round "Le Vieux Campeur" always fitted the bill.
But I do think my boredom threshold is uncommonly high. I sometimes wonder "What on earth have I done today?" then realise that as long as I've enjoyed the day, it doesn't matter. Part of my adaptation to old age.....

You know it makes sense.

@Origen, actually, I also never get bored in practice. Nothing to do with adapting to old age, which is an activity I am not concentrating on, but rather with a lifelong love of reading.

@Origen, I don't find that unusual at all... I love it when my wife is working and the boys are at school / bad weather day - and I have free time - I get to do what I please (which is sometimes not much)... love it.... My father used to tell us, as children, "you're not bored... you're BORING... now go outside!"
@ElzP, I can't IMAGINE not having good/easy access to a supermarket... or good internet... ability to complete my work responsibilities (easily/conveniently), or... or...
Living in a resort? (for more than a week)... not for me.
I'll trade a bit of a commute + variety vs ski in/out, but stuck in 1 place... but that's just me.

I don't get this. You are no more "stuck in one place" living on the side of a mountain than living in Annecy or Menthon St Bernard or the suburbs of Basingstoke.

@Origen, yes, you're right - and forgive my poor choice of wording - we don't disagree.
I simply mean, that I'd rather be "stuck" in a place that offers me greater access to the 'things I want and need'... (where 'things I want and need' is different for everyone.)
For me, I've just come back from a week in Tignes above the Irish Pub, and within earshot of the discotheque... so I'm a bit off-put on the resort thing.
It was good for a few days, ski in, very convenient... but not for me for the season.
For the OP, that's up to her to decide what she wants... maybe reading our input will help her decide.

True up to a point, but it depends which mountainside and what transport and free time you have. In any event, heaven for ever preserve me from the suburbs of Basingstoke. But, again, that's just me, it's not for me to judge what other people like or want.

Living in the middle of a ski resort doesn't appeal to me, but it's not necessary to be in some kind of concrete jungle to have "ski in/out" access.

Being able to pop out for a short ski is one of the key criteria for the OP. As it would be for me if I were contemplating that sort of season. Depending on how the work is going, and what the weather is doing (and as we know that changes minute by minute in the mountains), being able to pop out for an hour or two would be perfect.

If I was single and bilingual, I would head for the Chamonix valley. I have used some of the co-working spaces there and in Sallanches, and you would have to be really socially stunted not to meet all sorts of interesting people from around the world. Plus the opportunity to find ski buddies.

In a co-working space, unless you're head down all day, people hang out at the break room and ask about places to get lunch. It's easy to strike up a conversation about skiing, hiking, etc. Not really a pressure-packed environment.

@ElzP, why did you pick Briancon? We are looking at a year long move abroad to a French speaking ski town (family if 5 from the us with EU passports). really want easy access to skiing daily for the grownups and kids when they are not in school, trail running, biking, backcountry.. anything outside really.. Briancon has been mentioned a few times to us and I have never been. thx.

Interesting discussion! We have a nice family house near Lac Léman but I would move full time to Verbier in an instant if I could persuade the family.
