Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Do my boots need adjustment or not?

I bought some new AT boots a few months ago - Lange Freetour 110 - due to a change to AT bindings and my old alpine boots probably a touch too big (I went down a size on the new ones).

I tried on a bunch of boots, some were agony, some too soft, but the Lange boots were a tight fit but pretty good out the box.

In the past few weeks ive been wearing them in the evening to get them bedded in. I put my BD insoles in, and found my feet were numb after 30 minutes, my right foot particularly and sore on the instep. I tried again with the standard insoles (the BD ones are for my high arch, so probably raised by foot up) and they were ok for an hour but feet still tingling. Without the insoles they were pretty ok.

I bought some thinner socks, and tried again a couple of times with the BD insoles back in. Each time a bit better. Now they are ok with the bottom two clips undone, but get tingling feet after 30 minutes when done up (on the loosest notch), right foot bit worse.

Persevere or go back to the shop (I can get a free adjustment made)? I don’t want to get the boots stretched, then they are too lose if the liner beds down more. Also not quite sure how things will play out in the cold - will they feel tighter or not?

Can you ring and ask advice from the person who fitted them?

Were the BD insoles in when you had them fitted?

For what it's worth... my custom insoles are there for helping my arch recover (I had flat feet and the medical orthotics have been correcting it, my ski boot insoles just help my foot with more support in the arch).

Every year I have to have the lower part of the boot stretched up a bit to create more room inside, otherwise I get numb feet even with all the catches undone.

Why are you scared of stretching the shell? If your feet need it then your feet need it, you can't pertain to have high arches on one hand then try and keep your boot in the same shape that it was manufactured in. There are probably less than 100 ski boot models (excusing different sizes) in the world to cater for a world population of 7.5 billion, clearly we're not all going to fit into the standard size...

Just wearing them doesn't mirror how you will ski in them. When you ski your heel pulls back and your shins pressure the cuff, this takes pressure off the top of your foot. Also just wearing will hardly bed the liner in. Ski a few days then decide if they need any bits blown out.

Thanks for the responses. To answer a few questions:

The fitting wasn’t much more than trying on as many pairs as possible. They felt ok, so my idea was to wear them and then see if I feel any problems. But I can easily pop back in the shop.

I’ve had the same numb/cold feet issue, even in my old/larger boots, then it was because I had the buckles tight because the boots are too big. Got the feeling back when loosening the third buckle down particularly in the past.

Indeed, which was part of my persevere thought. And I see a lot of people unclipping buckles on lifts etc (don’t want to become a faffer though). I guess I’m afraid of getting there any just not being able to keep them on for more than half an hour. I will try my best to get out early December, maybe a ski test weekend. Just that it’s a 5 hour drive to the nearest ‘proper’ ski area.

Just bought some new boots (oops!). My experience of new ones in the past is that there is no comparison between wearing them around the house and finally getting out skiing in them. Yes-I get tingling and numbness, but after a few days the liner packs out and the new boots start to feel fab.

This time I have moved to a narrower last as I was after a higher performance (more money too!). So my fingers crossed..! Felt great in the shop, and back home with insoles etc inside, so I am hoping for good things, even though last night my feet felt like they were in a vice and going a bit blue after about 30 mins.

In the past, having been to a pro boot fitter, he advised clients to use them for a couple of days so you can get an impression of the pressure points and painful bits, then head back for adjustments. It does mean committing to not returning them and knowing of a good in resort boot fitter.
