Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What do you mean 'unbelievably'? Surely you mean 'inevitably'! Shocked

@Kenzie, I guess we are both right!!!!!

Well the snow has eased off a bit this afternoon but it is still blowing a gale. It has been so wild that I have not ventured out (yet!) but a pile of admin is now in the out tray. It looked like most of the aircraft have coped with the wind and the traffic has been bad, but the rise in temps has helped a little and now chains are only required from the Dam. Hopefully that means most folks will get here before its Sunday!

The snow will continue until around midnight, tomorrow morning will be heavily overcast as we wait for the pisteurs to make sense of what has happened today. But it will start snowing again just after lunch and the wind will pick up again through the afternoon. Monday will be snowy all day and the winds will again shut most of the high lifts, it will be a westerly. Tuesday will remain snowy and windy all day and the wind will swing to the north to further complicate the off piste conditions. Wednesday will see a marked improvement with sunny periods all day and a gentle breeze, it will still be quite chilly. Spring, the sunshine and balmy temperatures return on Thursday and Friday.

For the aviators tomorrow, there are few problems that I can see, it will be showery and there will be gusty winds around the showers across the whole of the UK and over here. There is a very slimchance of early fog at Chambery, but it should be gone by first landing time.

They are still working on tomorrows avalanche bulletin, it is quite late, so obviously complicated. Be careful!

Yes bergfex looks interesting today. It has a sudden increase in wind speed to gale force after 1pm with heavy snow. May want to ensure that you are not in a distant valley or somewhere that you can't ski down from!

Yip a 'game of two halves'. The weather decided to follow Friday's forecast instead of yesterdays and we awoke to blue skies with just the odd cloud. So out of the door at full speed. First job was to negotiate round the lift office queue - it was huge, have people not hear of the interweb? Now it would have been very easy to get carried away today as some inevitably did, skiing across between avalanches?? So it was mostly relatively gentle slopes today, but the snow was fabulous, about 25cm of fairly light snow on average. After a Merles to Tichot run we returned to the pimples to the west of Grand Huit for a couple of goes, followed by the Col de Ves and then Palet drag. Really good snow and easy to ski. By 1130 it was time for a restorative burger at the Aspen, where we

Back in an hour, GeorgeVII and Lady George have just arrived for a sH's cuppa....

were joined by Kevin Rolland the half pipe wizard, who was celebrating his qualification from earlier in the morning. If its good enough for an athlete, it must be good enough for us.

After that we could see the thin cloud starting to arrive from the west, a quick trip to the to top of the Grande Motte was in order where, unusalyy after a storm, the snow was soft and deep. We also lapped the off piste around Genepy by which time it was snowing and the wind was starting to blow. 2 hours from blue skies to white out. So it was time to call the subs off the bench onto the piste for the second half (probably all those people from the lift off ice queue). It has now been snowing heavily for the last 2 hours and the winds are wild.

The winds will continue to strengthen and it will continue to snow all day tomorrow. expect a lot of lifts to close and a slow start as the pisteurs rearrange the snow into an eye pleasing fashion. There may even be the odd thunderstorm in the afternoon. Tuesday will start with light snow which should stop for the afternoon, there will still be strong winds at altitude. Wednesday will be sunny with clouds bubbling up on the peaks in the afternoon, the wind will pick up late on too. Thursday will be much warmer, sunny, light breezes and the odd fluffy cloud. Friday will be like summer, blue skies and sunshine and the freezing level above the Grande Motte.

Bit of a storm last night rolling eyes Horizontal, vertical, swirling snow everywhere with windy gusts up to 200 kmh reported on the Grande Motte.

As @chocksaway forecast it will probably be a little slow opening this morning with the possibility of everything closing this afternoon as even higher winds are predicted Puzzled

The good news is it put down another 50 cm last night and it is still snowing.

@stewart woodward, It sounded like it was going to blow the window in at 2am this morning. Pisteurs blasting up in the Palafour sector at 5am. Road clearing going on most of the night. Not the best nights sleep wink .

Snow great. Visibility none existent at times. Wind may be starting to pick up again.

I think the only way to sum up today would be 'a good day at Glenshee'!

It has snowed continually all day, the links remained closed in view of the increasing winds and surely, bit by bit the lifts closed as we had a real storm blow through. So as one of my off piste buddies has just invested in an ABS and he got a spare canister to try it with today was test day. Ready:

Fired:

And fully inflated (showing his best side!):

To be honest I was expecting more of a bang. But it worked, here's hoping he never has to use it in anger.

Now the weather is all a bit of a conundrum, the pressure charts vary each time they come out, so there are some changes from yesterday and there are no guarantees! The snow will continue through the night, there may be a brief glimpse of the sun tomorrow between lengthy snow showers. The forecasts are varying between windy and breezy, I am tempted to stick with windy. However, after all todays snow and the wind this afternoon it will be another progressive start tomorrow with Avalanche Risk 4, possibly the most dangerous day of this season so far. So if you spot a good pitch in the sun have a good think. A weather system to the north is currently just about going to reach us on Wednesday, so snow in the morning and windy. It should clear in the afternoon with a milky sky. Thursday will see a jump in temperature by 4 or 4 degrees, a thin veil of cloud at height and there will still be a brisk wind. Friday will be a balmy spring day with sunshine, light breezes and another rise in temperatures up to +10 degs in the villages at lunchtime. Almost 4 seasons in a week. The outlook for the weekend is unsettled.

Time to go to the pub to claim the national debt of a small nation back from George VII wink

So skiing down below the top station of the Sache bubble, came across two people walking up. Stopped to check if they were ok. Turned out to be Brits, with just a single ski between them. Told us they had been avalanched whilst skiing the blue [Melezes] piste below the cut off with the red piste and the lady buried. The guy said he had had to dig his companion out - he didn't have a shovel. She had lost both skis and he one of his. They had called the incident in, but had not had any help, which seemed unusual, and were walking up to the bubble station. As they were unhurt and seemed not to be suffering any other way, we went off to speak to the pisteurs. We passed the junction with the blue piste, which was not closed off. When we spoke to the authorities, they said they were aware and by the time we passed back in sight of the junction the piste had been closed. Not sure what they meant by "buried", but I guess a very scary incident for the couple, who didn't seem too experienced, whatever the case. Not that unusual for some snow to slide on to the piste there, but never seen anything quite that serious. Not sure if it was a natural slide or folk off piste above the piste that might have triggered.

The storm carries on! Looks like another 30cm last night and once again it is still snowing Very Happy The winds have abated, thankfully. Yesterday afternoon was a 'proper storm' (anybody follow Michael Vaughan?) wink

Today looks like more of the same without the high winds. The poubelle monitors are redundant as they have been completely covered for 2 days rolling eyes

Tomorrow looks like a return to sunshine but with a avi risk of 4/5 the pisteres will be holding their breath all day.

Let's hope that is correct George. Sounds like a big fall on what would be a busy run in most circumstances so let's hope for a lucky outcome. But an avalanche onto on a "Open" piste does sound like a situation which can only result in very bad news.
