@snowheads68, certainly looking chilly mid month at present. 00z ECM also supported that.
Here's SLF for Switzerland. My bold. Strong winds are going to be a major feature of next few days.
"Weather forecast through Saturday, 4.3.2017
In northern regions on Saturday it will be sunny to begin with, accompanied by storm-strength southerly winds. During the course of the day in southern regions, skies will become heavily overcast to an increasing extent and the snowfall will spread over the Main Alpine Ridge into the bordering regions. On the Main Alpine Ridge and southwards therefrom, skies will be heavily overcast and there will be bouts of heavy snowfall from region to region, many of which will be intensive. The snowfall level will descend during the course of the day down from 1500 m to approximately 1000 m. In the upper Alpine valleys of Ticino the snowfall will extend down to low lying areas.
Fresh snow
- Upper Valais part of the Main Alpine Ridge from Monte Rosa region into the Binntal, northwestern Ticino: 30 to 50 cm;
- in the southern Simplon region and in Bedretto as much as 70 cm;
- remaining parts of Main Alpine Ridge, remaining sectors of the southern flank of the Alps: 15 to 30 cm;
- in the regions further to the north, only a few centimeters.
Temperature
At midday at 2000 m in western and southern regions, -1 °C; in eastern regions, +3 °C.
Wind
Winds at high altitudes will be southerly, blowing at strong to storm strength; in northern regions foehn storms will extend down into the valleys.
In Ticino, moderate to strong velocity southerly winds will prevail, also extending down to low lying areas.
Outlook through Monday, 6.3.2017
Sunday
In northern regions, conditions will be variable, accompanied by snow showers above approximately 1000 m, and including sunny intervals. The southerly winds are expected to slacken off. In southern regions the snowfall will come to an end and during the course of the day skies will continually brighten. The danger of naturally triggered avalanches will diminish. However, the overall situation will continue to be treacherous for skiers and freeriders undertaking tours in outlying terrain.
Monday
In northern regions skies will be overcast and snowfall is anticipated above approximately 700 m. Strong-velocity westerly winds will arise. In southern regions it will be partly sunny. Avalanche danger might increase somewhat from region to region in the north and in the west; in southern regions, avalanche danger will decrease."

Alex Deakin, a weather guy on twitter, explains the relatively dry winter for the UK (and at the same time the poor winter in the European Alps) using a Hovmoller chart. Why? No one really knows. Higher Global Temperatures? Polar Vortex? ENSO?

Absolutely hammering with snow at saas fee village level now. Very good morning, but everything shut now. Good decision IMO: Very windy and small powder sluffs coming down onto some areas of piste

Perhaps to the Western Alps, some 64+kt (Cyclone strength) winds may come in the next couple of days. But GFS is probably over stating it.
Next 5 days worth of snowfall. Better falls to the Northern Alps, particularly to the west with 100cm+ accumlation which is great for Europe. March definitely is giving skiers hope for the rest of Spring's worth of skiing.

@Jellybeans1000, Alex Deakin is a highly respected UKMO forecaster and regular presenter on the BBC, his twitter account underplays his qualifications as it is private. He is certainly right that change started in late Feb, we are currently inundated with snow and gale force winds in Tignes. Just a few lifts open around the villages. Expecting a big jump in avi risk for tomorrow.

Nearly all lifts closed in Chamonix a Valley today - lucky for us we're staying in Les Houches and they opened at about 11am 😀
A mixed day weather wise. Rain down in the village, heave snow above 1300m at times, sunny occasionally.
Snow forecast for this evening, wind has died down and forecast for fair weather tomorrow am - early start required before snow comes back tmrw pm.....

Hi all!
So, im fairly new to interpreting more advanced weather forecasts etc and i have some questions. Sorry if theyre abundandt or stupid. Going to 3Valleys 18-26/3 and then chamonix til 1/4. Starting to worry about the snow now.
Looking at regular forecasts, a week from now there looks like a huge spike in temperatures in these areas is expected with temperatures over 5 and 12° C respectively and freezing levels over 3000 meters around 10/3. Whats supposed to happen to cause this sudden (and temporary) surge in temperatures? What will actually happen? What could this relatively short warm temps mean for snow quality afterwards?
And, how does the outlook for southwest alpes (chamonix and VT in particular ) 18/3-1/4 look for those competent enought to interpret the forecasts?
Thanks in advance!!

@staffsan, why would you worry about the snow?
1. Any forecast that far out is speculative at best.
2. A day of 12C will have more or less no effect on the snowpack.
Best Cham forecast is here http://chamonix-meteo.com/chamonix-mont-blanc/weather/forecast/morning/5_days_weather_forecast.php and you'll note their own prediction of reliability is "poor" ...
I should of course mention that I am limiting my comments to on piste conditions. A warm spike is unlikely to bode well for short term off piste stability...

Spoiler
Might have been a language issue there, im worried about how the snow coverage will be mid-end march. Should'nt i be? ^^
Yeah i reckon all forecasts, especially longtime, have low reliability - but still im curious about the expected spike in temperatures atound the 10th. Is that normal for the alpes in march? Im northern and have only been to the aples twice (les arcs, 2 alpes) and in january both times.

@staffsan, it was hitting 16C in Cham last weekend... not terribly unusual in sunshine.
Thru March Brev-Fleg will start breaking down as they are direct south facing. But above 1,800m or so there's nothing to worry about.

Ok, i guess warm temps in chamonix village doesnt scare me as much as the 6°C in val thorens 10/3. Is that to be expected sometimes in march too? I just hope it wont be all slushy, as ive never skied late season before. Will the rest of 3v be skiable or muddy? Will grand montets be the only place to go in late march? I guess these are questions asked a thousand times before but i kinda was wondering about this years conditions late march in cham/3v areas in light of current long time forecasts, thanks for bearing with me.

Spoiler@staffsan, welcome to Snowheads . I think the key message is that the weather and snowfall have been all over the place this season. Christmas was like mid April. So was mid February. As things stand snow cover will be better in the second half of March than anytime in the season (talking northern French Alps here).
As for trying to interpret "advance" weather forecasts the best answer is probably not to bother! A sure route to furred arteries. Lap of the Gods territory! |
Hi, and thank you!
I guess youre absolutely right, little meaning in worrying. Its just, im in africa right now and starting to seriously yearn for some good snow! Ill just hope for good skiing v 12-13 (and all other weeks for the rest of you ) and hold on to this:

If you have a fondness for cold and snow might I recommend the 12z GFS, a fine vintage on offer this evening which bar the brief warm up at the end of this week (nothing unusual for spring), should leave a fresh and snowy flavour on your palate through mid month and quite possibly beyond...
