Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Re: the forth rd bridge diversion.
Drove down to edinburgh airport just now. The journey time for the aviemore-airport part was 2h30m to 2h40m. In a campervan that won't go above 60mph. Good for the avge speed cameras. The road south was clear, though the north seemed to be much much busier.
It was teeming down with rain at aviemore (maybe snow up top?). The hills you could see from the A9 looked really really bare though Sad

Should add that the detour allowed us to see the kelpies for the first time, very impressive, and much larger that I expected.

There is a slim chance that Cairngorm may open the upper slopes for the first time on Xmas Eve (tomorrow)...

Not looking good so far this year. Hate to say it, but we're due a bad one. Been really spoilt on the west the last few years, smashing glencoe from Jan to May.

But....

- Snow forecast for the next two days.
- Glencoe's one working cam showing some snow but no views of upper mountain Confused
- Nevis looking increasingly white above the gondola top station Smile

So post Christmas ski tour not yet ruled out though (as well as snow cover) wind could be an issue....

Just been up to Cairngorm today to see some snow. It looks quite promising from a distance but it's such a thin cover, even sledging looked a bit tricky.

Cover looks to be improving; it certainly looks skinnable up; & we're wondering if there could be enough snow for some turns at altitude Puzzled

Hi mountain addict,

Sorry for the late reply. Only went up to the railway car park so hard to comment on what's like higher but more rain and mildness today makes me think it would n't be much cop. I thought we might have at least seen some snowboarding kids messing around yesterday, but just too much heather poking through..

- Looks very white to low level on the cams.
- Weather forecast is reasonable for tomorrow.
- So decided to go for it....we'll be ski touring at Cairngorm in the morning after an overnight stay in Perth.
- We had heavy rain and temp down to 3C on the drive up - with flashing road signs saying the snow gates are closed on the Lecht road.
- Will hopefully get some reasonable turns in - fingers crossed. Report to follow ASAP.

Got home from Christmas in the Dolomites (that had only manmade snow and wall to wall sunshine for the week) to rain in edinburgh. Turned to snow at drumochter. Really heavy Christmassy snow, all the way up passed dalwhinnie, Kingussie, aviemore, Grantown, the dava, edinkillie, then back to rain about 15 miles from home. Grrrr.
Still, should be a fair bit of white stuff landing in the right places. Road signs on way home saying A939 was shut.

Does anyone know if Cairngorm isn't open for skiing will they let you take boards up on the fenicular and let you out at top?

Hi @MCL, they won't let you out at the top if their 'closed system' is in place. Cairngorm were banging on about trying to get the beginners area open on their facebook page, but only to people 'under instruction'. They can't stop you hiking up for a slide though.

Cairngorm report - Sun 27.12.15:
- Cold and clear day - trace of snow in Aviemore and trees and scenery very white by we drove up to Glenmore.
- Skis on and skinned from the car in a very snowy Cas Car Park - about 4" of fresh where it hadn't been cleared.
- Lower slopes snow looked very thin and patchy but good packed cover on Home Road, so we went up there.
- White Lady looking er, white but patchy in parts so we gave it a miss and headed up the Zig Zags.
- Zig Zags in very good shape after first 2 corners, which were a bit gravelly.
- A lot more snow needed in Gunbarrel; though just more snow needed in Cas.
- Ascenders' high left side of Cas had excellent cover, as had Traverse to the top station.
- Runs served by Ptarmigan Tow were in good shape, but the main bowl below there and the Ciste Fairway were wind scoured and patchy in places, though some good powder in other areas. Definitely enough snow to open Ptarmigan Tow but not the Ciste Tow without significant piste basher work; definitely skiable on good cover to two thirds of the way down the zig zags - remaining zigs could be sorted with a bit of snow farming.

We ascended to Cairngorm summit and skied fresh tracks Very Happy more or less all the way to the bottom of the Ciste tow - after heading from the summit towards the top of the Ptarmigan Tow. Some fantastic snow (powder/pisted powder higher up) and the views from the top were amazing in lovely light.

The run to the bottom - via the Traverse, Cas and Home Road - was great as it had all been pisted.

We are easily pleased but it was a far better day than we expected - and just lovely to be out for our first Scottish turns of the winter Smile. In fact one of our best ever days in Scotland. Just a shame that the forecast is looking bleak for midweek - rain and hairdryer wind at all levels... Sad

Will post some pics/a trip report in the next day or two.

I don't think I've seen such a high average wind speed anywhere in UK. I think over 70mph average is officially hurricane conditions rather than hurricane force gusts.
