At last something positive! 11cm predicted in Les Arcs on Monday 21st!

Would be wonderful if forecast is correct! I was in resort last week and the pistes were holding up surprisingly well due to good manicuring of slopes and temperatures staying around zero above 2000m but some fresh snow would help with the extra skiing traffic over the holidays.

Had a lovely day skiing from one sun-terrace to another, with spring-like temperatures and unrelenting sunshine! First session of the winter skiing with my girlfriend after not seeing her for nearly a month, so it was rather a perfect day. We didn't head out until about 11am, by which time the pistes were softened to creamy, grippy snow, generally improved on last week's polished snow. A few more spots where stones and earth were breaking through, but generally good coverage above Arc 1800 and 2000. Some pistes which hadn't seen so much love and attention by the pisteurs were a bit 'meh', but overall conditions are enjoyable (and much better than this week last year). The resort is busier than last week, but the only lift queue we suffered (for all of three minutes) was at the Arcabulle. Most entertaining sight of the day was a group wearing high-vis vests getting down (I hesitate to use the word ski) an off-piste pitch underneath the new Carreley chair. It was a group of kids and adults, only two of them able to make linked snowplough turns the rest side-slipping down. I think they were in training for this year's Darwin Awards.
Rumours of a few fresh flakes of snow tomorrow, but hard to imagine that after today's weather. The rest of Christmas week looks back to mild, sunny conditions. The resort is working hard to keep the pistes in decent condition, but more snow would be very, very nice

Snow conditions much better than I feared in Les Arcs and La Plagne yesterday. Not too crowded either. Sure there are some threatening rocks, including one on an unplanned naturide run near Bellecote Glacier that seriously damaged one (hire) ski. Generally the pistes are fair at lower levels, including Plan Peisey. Good above 1800. Bellecote was excellent though and well worth the somewhat tedious trek from Arc 1600. Watch out for very thin rocky sections on runs back from La Plagne to Vanoise Express. Cloudy this morning with possibility of snow at about 1800+ this afternoon and evening. Compared with expectations, happy days!

Only the second day this month when it's not been a clear sky! It's a bit colder (although still not cold, 2 degrees @ 1800m at 9am today) so maybe we will get a few flakes of snow today.

Back to blue sky today, and currently 3 degrees at 1800m. Didn't ski yesterday so not sure yet how the weather affected conditions, will report later today. I think we were right on the southern end of the rain/snow that affected the NW Alps, so we didn't get too much of either. Snowlike seemed to be around 2100m, so we had a little bit or rain at our place during the afternoon, and a little bit of snow could be seen on the webcams higher up.

I was out yesterday skiing. The snow/rain line appeared about 2000m but there was very little of either. For some reason we are slow getting out this morning. The soft snow was actually quite nice to ski all the way down to Arc1600 yesterday

I love the pictures@rob@rar, The rain down here in 1600 didn't make a lot of diffference but it looks as if they ran the snowmaking a bit over night because the cachette piste was improved.
The 1600/1800 side of the resort was almost deserted. We skied down to the Transarc and walked straight on. Later on we finished the day by skiing down cascades to the combourcier chairlift. Once again there was noone there apart from the lifty. A couple brave souls were actually attempting combourcier - it looked grim. However mont blanc was almost empty (we saw and instructor and a class of 2 making their way down) had fair snow coverage and really enjoyable. Far nicer than the queue for Bois De L'ours.
A second your comments about the Rodeo tabogan run. The firm snow made it really enjoyable. After all adults can have fun as well.

@johnE, we jumped in to the queue for Bois de L'ours as I wasn't certain that Comborciere was open. Wasn't too bad, about 5 minutes, but your option was better.

@rob@rar, we simply noted that the sign saying it was shut was no longer there. Since the Mont Blanc lift isn't running the piste of the same name has seen very little traffic. I think we will try La Plagne tomorrow followed by an evening pirade at the Arpette.

@johnE, do you know why the Mont Blanc chair is closed? I got a message via the new Yuge app on my phone mid-morning yesterday that it was closed and thought it might have been because the piste was unskiable. But if people are accessing it via Comborciere perhaps the piste is OK...?

I have no idea why it is closed. It was open for a brief period on Sunday afternoon - so we went up, but it appears closed ever since. The piste has a few bits of earth showing, ut less than most pistes. I wonderred if they were saving it for the new year week.

Good morning. I was fitted with a neck brace yesterday so no skiing for a week. My partner is going stir crazy as in the lead up, I haven't been able to ski.
She desperately want to go out today but would prefer to join someone or a group partly for safety reasons as well as the social aspect.
She skis to a good standard and won't need looking after and comes with a good supply of beer money.
We are in arc 1800 if it helps.

It appears that the Mont Blanc chairlift is closed for "technical reasons"
We turned up at the Arpette resaurant for our evening meal and moonlit descent only to have our money returned as they were not opening this evening afterall. It appears that only 2 parties had booked the event and they couln't afford the cost of pistuers to escort us off the mountain.. It's a shame since it is a very good evening for a very respectable 30 euro for a savoie speciallity and wine.
We went over to La Plagne today and the resort was almost deserted. I have never known Christmas week so quiet. It was busier last year and there was no snow.

@johnE, This is encouraging for those like me coming out this weekend to La Plagne. Quiet slopes with average conditions are normally better than crowed slopes with good conditions. Just my view anyway

I'm Jerome from Grenoble, Nivolog/Peufdaddy's daddy.
Just wanted to say hello and thank rob@rar for sharing the links you spotted on Les Arcs Pisteurs FB page!
Also, I wanted to tell a bit of our story:
Nivolog is the company we created to edit Peufdaddy, a powder alarm mobile app that will wake you up (or let tourists oversleep) on those missed powder days.
"Yet another weather app" you may say. Right, but unlike Helly Hansen's First Tracks app, ours will be based on real-time data measured on the field, not on weather forecasts.
First step: get some data.
Some of you may already consult Météo-France's Nivôse weather stations, as we do, but data are not exactly real-time and anyway not (yet) opendata.
At this point our software project has turned into a more hardware one.
If you want something done, do it yourself: those Nivôse stations, we redesigned them taking advantages of what brings the Internet-of-Things era (cheap components, low-power consumption, long-range radio transmission).
We installed 10 systems in 5 resorts: Les Arcs, Les Contamines (picture), Les Gets, Chamrousse, Guzet (in the Pyrenees).
What you see on our website (http://lab.nivolog.com/map) is just the tip of the iceberg and the completion of this first step.

@rob@rar, I liked the picture of the grand col. The piste on the left with the big moguls is refuge, which is not so much closed as not opened. There is a notice at the top warning skiers that they are leaving the ski area and are doing so at their own risk. The moguls are big but the snow still has some give so tey are good fun

@genepi, not that I've heard. The were rumours that Val Thorens would restrict the use of discounted seasonnaire passes, but that turned out not to be accurate.

Nice photos @rob@rar, I particularly like that one of the coffee against the mountains, gives a real feeling of being there. Merry Christmas to you and Jane too, thanks for your time taken to get and post the pictures for us.
