Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val d'Isere/Tignes: Skin up, Ski down?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Anyone done this and have any info/advice? Going to be in Val next week and Tignes the following and would like to avoid a road transfer! Am a touring novice, been once on a 5-day trip around the Stubai end of last season with a few 1000m ascent days. Kick turns on steep slopes were managed but not hugely enjoyed. All other aspects fantastic! Skiing-wise happy on variable off-piste but would avoid really gnarly couloirs. Any advice greatly appreciated.

From La Daille you should be able to follow the GR5 to Tignes Lac in reasonable safety.

...but the lifts should be open from Saturday, 29th anyway.

Hi Jude. Thanks for your e mail by the way Smile.

Not sure where the GR5 route goes...but we have mountain biked a route 2 or 3 times that I think would be feasible - & (at least as far as we can tell in summer) not too radical. (You might need advice on avalanche risk though...)

Descending from Toviere, you cut left under the Palafour lift then skirt/traverse the foot of the main massif - in downhill ski mode & staying as high as you can, following the obvious small valley to start with. The way levels out - skins on(!) - & you then aim for the shoulder of the mountain/col in the direction of Le Lac - ie diagonally left on a steady climb (not too steep).

After crossing a very flat section, Le Lac comes into sight and you can then traverse left to get to it. The end bit of the summer bike route zig zags down a fairly steep mountainside in big traverses so, if anywhere, that looks to be a part where there could be avalanche risk.

Also, the bike route ends with a (short) steep climb up to Le Lac - you end up at the foot of a glacial moraine. Not sure if that might be avoidable on skis.

Good luck!

Glad you enjoyed your ski touring debut wink. We are unlikely to be touring abroad this winter - on a bit of an economy winter as planning on visiting friends in Australia next summer (they live a couple of hours from the slopes in New S Wales so we're planning on hitting the slopes there Madeye-Smiley ).

Puzzled Puzzled Puzzled

Please make sure you know where you are going. The Palafour lift is not on Toviere.

Thanks Alan, it was a phenomenal trip! Finally - guilt-ridden Embarassed - getting pics on disc for you. Here's a taster... Sorry to hear there won't be an Alpine tour this year Sad but the alternative sounds good!

Which route, if any, would you take up from Val/La Daille, Stewart?

Without knowing your experience & snow conditions on the day you intend to travel I wouldn't be happy offering any advise. However I believe the suggested route would take you from La Daille up the 'Vallon de le Toviere' & 'Pas de la Toviere' which leads onto one of the highest risk avalanche slopes in Tignes. So please ensure you check out the snow conditions/avalanche risk if you intend taking this route.

Ooooops! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed I know, I know! Ta for that @stewart woodward. Schoolboy error. I have sacked my PA/typist, who should of course, have typed Tommesuses lift. I'll never make a mountain (or even ski) guide rolling eyes....

Apologies Jude wink.

Re. the photos: It's always nice to have something to look forward to Laughing - especially if they are like the one you have posted.

Thanks Stewart, I wouldn't embark on something like this without getting some local expert knowledge on the day re. current and expected conditions. Thanks for the route info.

@stevomcd, agreed. Assume by week after next OP would be able to take the funi or the Daille gondola and then skin up under Tommeuses and skip round and down to Le Lac via Trolles. Assuming heavy backpack so no need for any silly shortcuts to Lavachet under Mickey's Ears rolling eyes

@zammo, Mickey's what? They took them down this summer - so will now have to be the peak formerly known as Mickey's Ears!!!!!!

PS Remember 3 years ago and the tragic accident just below the Top of the Tov. If there are no piste markers (ie the wooden coloured poles) there is no piste and therefore any rescue would be deemed off piste and may well be considered as skiing against local advice.

Should make for some interesting sets of off-piste route instructions - 'Head for Mickey's Ears, which aren't there any more ...'
