Got a few turns in snow, but mainly hard pack. Also at Brevent/Flegere. Cornu a mare, much battered even from yesterday.

jbob, yup, better than a few days ago but still a tad dodge - not skiing full days and in bed early every night. How long are you around for? I should be well enough for some aprés by next week.

@Zero_G, til mid April, going home for half term. Maybe scare a few cham snowheads to the Monkey next week sometime. Ch20 will be there anyway.

Epic day in Chamonix.
The light snow forecast turned into at least 15cm, and kept on all day. However the epic I had was getting up the hill.
I arrived at GM just as the new Gondola broke down, so there was an instant queue out of the door for the cable car.
Back in the car and headed up to Le Tour just as they were closing down the mountain, wind I guess.
A swift u turn and off to Flegere. Once up the cable car it was obvious why there were packed cabs coming down. The snow was lovely but the atmospherics were atrocious. There was a gale blowing, still snowing and zero vis.
Fingers crossed for the rest of the week.
I did hear some reports of a mini powder day at GM, lucky them.

Yes, 6 to 8 inches at GM. Made the mistake of going up the Bochard at midday & came down at snails pace through the mirk, snow & gale. Lifts stopping right, left and centre. Off piste was very much improved (not that I am in anyway expert in these matters).
Still snowing as we finished at 16.30. Looks like a nicer day tomorrow

Made a tactical decision to give GM a miss and return to Brévent today. Boy was it the right decision! Loads of soft, fluffy, shin-deep snow off piste with plenty of fresh tracks to be had The clouds cleared and the sun came out around 11.30am, so it was the closest I have come to a bluebird powder day this season.
Completely stacked it skiing a chairlift line: arse over head, snow everywhere, down my back, inside my goggles, inside my mitts. It was hilarious but the snow was so soft, so all good.
By 1.30pm, the sun (and all the frenzied skiers/boarders) had taken its toll, so everything became chopped up and heavy, resulting in some fab thigh burn. Brilliant day all round!

Great news things are looking up. We'll be in Cham for a long weekend this time next week. Hoping the predicted snowfall comes good this weekend.
Thanks for all the updates. It'll be what it'll be but for some reason can't stop checking in here so please keep it coming!

Good grief, no! We're onto a good thing with the dachshunds, we shouldn't break the streak now, who knows what would happen

Hey everyone, heading out to Cham tomorrow. Ridiculously excited, especially with the forecast looking strong. Assuming the pretty decent snowfall over Friday/Saturday materialises where's your best tip for Sunday? Forecast is for possibly a sunny day (I don't want to say Bluebird in case I jinx it!). GM seems like the best choice with fresh snow and good vis, but will everyone in the valley have the same thought?
Any insider tips for a sunny day of fresh in Cham???

Feast, nice! Would that be a powder dachshund or an all mountain dachshund?
jonnybroome, what type of skiing do you want to do and what level?

@Zero_G, All mountain.
The Movement Fly Swatter dachshund is my powder hound..

If the snow is right then as much powder as I can get! I'm advanced level. Although my wife is with me and she's just learning off piste (she's completely competent on piste).
I know Chamonix fairly well, but been a few years since I was there.
@Zero_G, is the ski shop in Cham yours? Do you have any Armadas available to try out? TST's in particular.
|
|
|
|
|
|
jonnybroome, a lot of people do tend to head straight for GM after a dump, so get there before the first lift and be prepared to queue.
Nope, the Cham shop is not mine – bastards stole my name! Email or phone Sole Boot Lab in Cham, I think they may have Armadas. You could also try Local (in Cham Sud) or Snell (on Rue Dr Piccard) where I've seen a selection of freeride-focussed skis. There's also one in Les Praz but I've forgotten the name (Idris could tell you, they stock his skis)

@jonnybroome, you could give the new Concept Pro shop behind the aiguille lift - they specialise in only high end freeride kit. BiL works there...

The rain turned to snow around 9pm. It's been snowing since. Quick trip to geneva this morning at 7am, interesting! It's put down about 20cm in the valley, it will be quite a bit more on the hill. This is the view at 11am from my balcon. Still snowing lightly.
