Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Significant snowfall across the Pyrenees all day. Temperatures plunging tonight and tomorrow bringing the snow down to 400m ish. The forecast 100kph winds seem to have abated so tomorrow may well be a great day with the snow still falling.

Looks like more snow arriving tomorrow afternoon primarily in the eastern Alps.

There also looks like a reasonable possibility of snow to the valley floors next Saturday/Sunday. At present nothing on the scale of this weekend's snowfall. But worth keeping an eye on.

GFS currently has several bands of snow heading towards the eastern Alps in the coming week. One on Monday afternoon into Tuesday early hours, followed by a further band late Tuesday into Wednesday. It looks like things will then clear up before snow returns next weekend. FI looks unsettled with the period around 07 to 12 January looking fairly snowy (though that remains too far out to take seriously).

Lech this morning.

After the recent heavy snowfall the next week or so in the western Alps looks dry on GFS, though Austria will see around average snowfall for the time of year.

But cold over most of Europe.

http://wxmaps.org/pix/temp4.html

A lot of ensembles going for something next weekend, but no clarity at present.

FI looks unsettled from 07 to 12 Jan, but too far off to take seriously.

our corner of the northern French alps seems to have had about half a meter but below 2000m it fell either on a meagre mostly manmade base or grass. Warm grass, at that. It was very welcome (unless you were trying to drive anywhere....) and has helped save the crucial new year week but much more is needed and the cannons are blowing tonight.

18z continues the theme of three bands of snow across the Eastern Alos in the coming week. Monday night into Tuesday, Tuesday in Wednedaty and then this weekend (arriving Sunday on 18z).

The chart below shows the emphasis on the Austrian end of the Alps. Looks like Scotland may pick up more in the second half of the week too.

00z GFS follows same broad pattern. Adds a fourth band of snow next Monday. Eastern Alps still favoured at this stage (see chart above).

Does that point to more snow in the Dolomites too?

Having escaped Snowmageddon in the Savoie, my attentions now turn to conditions for the S11BB - looks like a bit more snow would be welcome, but don't want a repeat of last year!

Still a long way off but it seems like there's some confidence building about another Atlantic disturbance moving into the N French Alps next Saturday...

Could it be Snowmaggedon, The Sequel?

So is it safe to say that all the panic of the past month fr those heading to Alps in mid to late December can now be laid to rest. Has the 'dump' /snow storms that have touched most resorts over the last number of days alleviated the worries of most the early to mid January or is there a risk of a southerly 'foehn' ruining things again over the next 7 to 10 days?? has the season been saved?

Bit mild Thursday but cold again for next weekend with supposedly another 25cm of snow on top of the 30cm forecast in the next 36 hours. This is Saalbach where they aren't taking risks and have had snow cannons firing continuously for the last 2 or 3 days.

@Sneachta2013, it rather depends on what happens from here. Many resorts will now be close to average for the time of year.

http://www.slf.ch/schneeinfo/schneekarten/hsm/index_EN

The snow in the coming week looks more likely to fall in the eastern Alps (so eastern Switzerland and Austria - see updated chart above). After that FI looks quite stormy as we go through January. The 06z (op and parallel) looks especially stormy for 10-12 Jan and you can see that in the positive NAO forecast

http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/precip/CWlink/pna/nao.sprd2.gif

So that is potentially looking relatively mild at times as storms come through, but with colder weather and snow following through. But all a fair bit out.

Austria still a bit below average for time of year: Saalbach on average 80/40cm (according to skiclub GB) whereas currently reporting 55/15cm but could well be at average by Weds morning. I hope.

Do you have a link that shows the runs in Saalbach? That link shows runs in Obergurgl for example, but not saalbach. Have found something on google earth before for Kitzbuhel...

After the storms of the last few days that had hit the Pyrenees with snow and high winds the sun has finally come out today allowing the hoards of visitors to ski in up to 60cm of powder and wonderfully groomed pistes. I am looking forward to after the weekend when the crowds will disappear just to have some solitude on the slopes.

Worth noting for those who accuse snow forecast of systematically over-estimating snowfall that many places had substantially more than forecast on Saturday.

Good point @pam w, but unlikely to make any difference to our usual moaning.
As guru Noza on the weather thread keeps telling us: it is nigh impossible to predict amount of snow with any accuracy. Would be far better to declare "small", "medium" and "large" as with t-shirts. (But then as we all know: large with t-shirt A becomes medium with t-shirt B . . . rolling eyes )
