I've booked flights to Vancouver for the first 10 days of New Year 2014. Just me and Mrs L. Does anyone have any Whistler accommodation suggestions?
I'm thinking of hotel or B&B. Good breakfast important! Preferably a room big enough to swing a cat. I'll have a car, so ski in/out not a priority. It'd be nice to be in walking distance of a range of restaurant options though; but don't want to be anywhere likely to be noisy. Not overly price sensitive if all the above boxes ticked, but don't demand a lot of luxury either.

We've been to Whistler twice and staye botht time at Cedar Springs

It's not really walking distance to restaurants but the rooms are spacious, the hosts are great and the food is excellent

laundryman, I'd recommend the Chateau Whistler, stayed there three times (only once for skiing, twice in summer). It is ski and out, easy walking distance to all of Whistler really. Several restaurants on site or just opposite. Breakfast in the Wildflower is fantastic. But it's worth seeing if you can get a deal on a Fairmont Gold room where breakfast in the lounge is included and is really nice and more peaceful, though not as extensive. The Mallard lounge is lovely. Ski & boot room is really amazing Don't pick the smallest room category, my brother in law was in one and they are small. Obviously it is expensive and luxurious and so you could probably find a better deal elsewhere, though it's worth signing up to the Fairmont President's Club as they send out 'Great Rates' emails each month and you could be lucky. Also some of the specialist TOs have good deals from time to time, Canadian Affair, Ski Solutions, Ski Independence etc.

If a breakfast is important DO NOT stay in the Listel! Whilst the hotel was fine on the main, the breakfast is the worst I've ever had!

I'd have said based largely on location and general standard the Westin is hard to beat, literally next door to the Gondy/plaza, but Trip Advisor seems to throw up a lot of people moaning about size of rooms. Only really been in the Lobby/Salomon shop/Starbucks myself so couldn't vouch.

fatbob, the rooms in the Westin are hotel rooms (the studios that is) so are on the small size, but they were more than big enough for two to spend some quality time in Whistler. Fantastic hotel.

yep - very good size for a hotel room; maybe a bit compact if you are expecting a full appartment size suite (although they wouldn't be a bad size for a cental London pied a terre!)
i got mates' rates when i stayed there; can imagine it would be spenny if you aren't getting a deal

This. From start to finish is very accurate and there could not be a better located place. We had the superior slope view room, which was amazing. Mallard bar is great for apres and lunch! The breakfast wraps in the place downstairs are epic, and made me feel sick for 6 hours!

We have stayed in the Westin in a studio with a kitchen so room was quite big, but parking charges etc....
Pan Pacific (viilage) we have stayed there in summer that was good the room was smallish but the breakfast was great.
Coast on Blackcomb, we stayed there over 10 yrs ago so its to long ago to coment. Any stay over 2 night we normally book an apartment.

Found a B&B with stellar TripAdvisor reviews - but unfortunately already booked out. Opted for a studio here instead:
http://www.glacier-lodge.com
Pretty good price for the size and facilities. Added bonus of ski in/out (more or less). It remains to be seen whether we'll use the kitchen facilities for an element of self-catering!
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, which I fully investigated.

laundryman, we stayed in Whistler about 12 years ago at the Delta Suites - big bedroom, living room with fireplace, bathroom and very well appointed kitchen. Bar one evening we ate out for about 8 nights but we did use the kitchen for breakfast. Our daughter was instructing there for the season so she had sorted out all the restaurants that she thought we would like to try - with her and some of her friends along for company most evenings. Future daughter in law also came up from the States to join us too - we have never eaten so well on a ski holiday or spent so much! but it was fun. The one evening that we ate in was so simple as the food in the supermarket was amazing for self-catering and we chose to do that on Oscar night. As we had an enormous washing machine and tumble drier in the kitchen our daughter more or less moved in with us for the week and brought all her sacks of washing with her.

holidayloverxx, thanks so much for that spot! It was not so clear on Expedia where I did my booking. Upgraded now - wallet a bit lighter!

laundryman,
Glacier lodge is very well situated and very comfortable: we always stay there. (Also home to the only place in town you can buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday!).
For future reference, I'd suggest checking out lodging via Allura direct (www.alluradirect.com).

joneski,
Yeah, they specialise in "fine wines", but also carry some emergency stocks of Okanagan plonk. (Actually, there are some very good Okanagan wines).
There's also a good selection of microbrewed beer in 6-packs.

Acacia,
We found the normal priced wines even some Okanagan ones, Hester Creek, Mission Hill and Blasted Church. I think I need a summer wine tour (again) just cannot bring any home.
I like the Okanagan Peach Cider, and the honey lagers, we gradually working our way through the beers of western Canada.
We try a few each time we go.
