Great stuff Peter S - Cheers! (Is the snow not getting as far as Yad Moss/Weardale then? Bit handier for us!)

Mountainaddict,
There probably is a dusting at Yad Moss but the webcam isn't updating at the moment. Weardale is showing a tiny bit. It won't be anywhere near enough for skiing yet.
Raise however is 400 feet higher and westerly showers are a good direction for snow there.
I'm sure if there is any chance whatsoever the really keen Members will run the tow tomorrow

Good luck to them.

Had a lovely run out to the Lake District today. Lots fo snow higher up, snow level was around 400m or so. On the very tope it was completely white, no rocks showing so obviously quite a lot had fallen over the past 48 hours.

The snowline message confirms that the tow will run tomorrow.
That'll be 3 days into the English ski season then and still only Guy Fawks

Peter S, lets get it right, England 3-0 Scotland for lift served skiing do far this season. How often does that happen?

More often than you might expect actually, partly due to the terrain involved requiring much less depth to be genuinely skiable, in a similar way to how the Eastern Scottish Areas can usually get up and running before the Western ones. (Though the Summit Runs at Nevis prob have the most snow at the moment).

Lots of people out (on Raise) |
It could have been four more if the membership info had been updated on the LDSC website .
It currently (and disappointingly) just says words to the effect of 'Joining info. to follow after AGM - Payment by Paypal'...So off we went to Glenshee and ski toured there instead.

good if wet day on Saturday. Sunday was much better weatherwise.
Great to get back on the snow and with new boots and skis !

After the thaw on Sunday temps have now dropped back to minus 2 up at raise. Should be fairly firm by Tuesday, but looks very sunny

Still loads of snow up at Raise and there was skiing again today. Its progged to run tomorrow. Hope to be there first thing. Weather looks OK although the mild theme looks set to continue next week and into the relaible timeframe.
Anyone else heading there tomorrow ?

Peter S, the reason why people won't go, is because I can't justify spending £50+, just on a lift ticket at Raise. The stupid "membership" policy means people stay away. Granted at times this would be beneficial, but not all the time. Imagine how much more money the club would make, if they made the odd day a non members day and charged £15. I would have loved to go up there, but seriously, £50 for a days skiing is ludicrous, let alone in England with one ski lift.

Ricklovesthepowder, isn't £50 membership and a season pass? So two trips = £25 per visit...... etc etc

kitenski, due to its location and inaccessibility, not everyone will make it up there 3,4,5 times a season so it's expensive. I would rather go to Yad Moss where I can walk to the car, takes 2 minutes to the ski area etc. Raise is a trek up a mountain and difficult to get to, so when it's £50 just for a ticket and possibly only use it once, people will stay away.

Ricklovesthepowder I agree. It's within easy striking distance for Mrs MA and me but given next week's catskiing trip to Canada and the associated expense, we've really cut back since the summer and can't justify £100 (+ petrol) for what could be a one off visit.
We might reconsider if there was a prolonged snowy/cold spell when we might get a few visits - or we might just nip up with touring skis at some point (and not use the tow) and suss out the area that way.
It's also ironic that Yad Moss members now get a discount at Raise - when we've been Weardale members for years....

Rick,
Its £50 for the SEASON, not per day. The tow has already run for 14 days making that probably some of the cheapest skiing in Europe. Looking at the forecast and the depth and state of the snow up there I would estimate it should be skiable into Christmas. I’ve managed two days so far so my marginal cost is down to £25 per day. You can also ski for £30 for the first day and then either pay £15 a day thereafter or buy a SEASON pass for a further £25. If you are a Yad Moss season ticket holder (cost £4 then you will only pay £10 per day mid week at Raise. That sounds good value to me ?
The club has to carry insurance and the insurance company insists that everyone who skis there is a Member.
I appreciate there is a cost driving to the Lake District, although that depends on where you live and whether you can car share. I imagine I can make a lot of trips to Raise for the price of one trip to Canada !
You do have to walk but that is a large part of its appeal to keen skiers.

Peter S, when was this new pricing brought into effect? I'm pretty sure you couldnt just turn up and buy a day ticket last year for one off days?

Rick,
The AGM in November brought in the changes.
You've always been allowed to just turn but you have to join the club to use the tow and the facilities. Membership of the club now costs £30.
This year you can turn up and pay £30 for your first day (free) and then decide to pay another £15 per day thereafter or buy a season pass for £25.
http://www.ldscsnowski.co.uk/page23.html
To put that in context, it costs £25 for ONE HOUR in the Chill Factor, Manchester

That sounds like very good value to me £30 one day, £45 for 2 days, £55 for 3+ days.
It gives people options, and there is very little commitment up front.

Peter S Thanks for the clarification. Last time I looked (early Nov, when the tow was open), there were no membership details on the website so I, for one, hadn't spotted the £30/one off option.
That does make it a much more enticing proposition - particularly if there's still snow this weekend as in Scotland it looks like Hurricane Jock could be blowing in for the next four or five days....
And finally, is there only snow in the immediate vicinity of the tow at Raise - or is it currently possible to skin up from lower down?
