Evening all,
So the GF might be on a ski trip with work next March (she's in the military) and there's an opportunity that I can fly out on the Saturday they'd be coming home and the two of us can stay on until the Tuesday.
Looking at flights, I'll probably go for Saturday morning LGW-INN Dep 0700 Lands 0955, returning on the Tuesday afternoon INN-LGW 1505 both with EasyJet.
Thinking we'll stay in Innsbruck and hire a car and drive to a different area each day. By having the car, I'm hoping it means we can dump all the gear in the car and ski Saturday afternoon before checking in to an airbnb/hotel, likewise on the Tuesday, we can ski until midday before getting to the airport for the flight home.
Does anyone know of any ski hire shops in Innsbruck, or if there's even a shop in the airport? This would really speed up getting to the slopes on the Saturday.
In terms of ability, I've been skiing for the last 14 years (late 20s now), and got plenty of weeks under my belt, so happy to ski anything. The GF will have just done her first week, so we'll be sticking to the easier runs, I'm not fussed about anything too extreme, as it's more about hoping she gets the bug for it, then will understand why I spend my whole life wishing I was skiing not working!  I was thinking of Axamer Lizum, Igls and Schlick 2000, would these be good bets for what we need?
Any general hints and tips from those that live there or have done something similar would be greatly appreciated!

For rental, I only know Die Börse in the city. There are probably others, but that one’s pretty central. Good English spoken, if that’s a concern.
Axamer Lizum and Schick 2000 should be fine, and you can always keep driving up the valley to Stubai. Patchscherköfel/Igls would suffice for one of your shorter days, I think. Maybe stay off Nordkette for the time being.

@swskier, something you should be aware of if you decide to self-cater, is that supermarkets mostly close around 6pm on Saturday and there is only one (in the Hauptbahnhof) that reliably opens on Sundays, so it might be worth doing your shopping before you ski. Or stay in a hotel

There are free ski buses to the closer resorts.
Die Borse is around the corner from the marriott hotel (& casino) where the free bus picks you up from ( well, takes you to the bus station & board a slope specific bus). So maybe no need to hire a car.
Also dont forget you could do evening tobboganing & if your lucky see the light show.

I do wonder if you might be better off staying in one resort. There are lots within an easy (hour or less) drive of Innsbruck. Some examples might be Serfaus / Fiss, Hoch Zillertal or St Anton. You should be able to get to the resort in time to hire skis and get an afternoon skiing on Saturday, on the way back Tuesday morning might be pushing it though, in some places, you can buy a pass for a couple of hours. If you stay a little way outside of the resort you should be able to get somewhat cheaper accommodation if that is a concern. Hiring skis in the resort would be less faff than going into the centre of Innsbruck. You can also think about evenings, do you want to have party places or a quiet pizza? Driving to even nearby places does add a fair amount to the day, 30 minutes drive turns into 45 mins by the time you found a parking place, put on ski boots, bought a lift pass etc.

@Scarlet, thanks for the tips. Although we would be self catering, we would probably eat out and not cook, but good to know about the supermarkets.
@munich_irish, I had thought about staying in a resort. I'll take a look in to it, I guess I thought about staying in Innsbruck just to maximise time on snow, but for the sake of a half day, it might be worth staying in a resort, especially with the option of some apres and no need to drive...

Hi SW skier, my girlfriend and I spent a week at Axamer Lizum near Innsbruck in February.We didn't use a hire car and didn't stay in Innsbruck itself.
We got the 7am flight from Gatwick, out the door of Innsbruck airport by 10:30 caught the bus from the airport that comes every 15mins to the central bus station, caught another bus to Axams where our hotel was, checked into the hotel, got into our ski gear and walked 50metres down the road to the free ski bus to the resort that comes every 30mins.
20min free scenic ski bus ride to Axamer lizum and it drops you off right by the ticket office. We walked past that and into the ski hire/ski school hut on the right (intersport also have a shop opposite) and hired our skis/snowboard. Bought an afternoon ski pass and were skiing down the top of the mountain by 1pm. Return buses come every 30mins till about 5:30pm.
I'm a strong intermediate skier and my girlfriend a beginner snowboarder and found the resort was enough to keep us
busy all week however there were other buses on select days in Axams that took you to Schlick2000 and Stubai Glacier.
My advice would be to stay in a village nearby a resort and consider using the free ski bus service.Im not a big public transport fan in the UK but was pleasantly surprised how regular and efficient it was out there and we only spent 7euros each to get to the airport and back by bus!

I would also suggest to head for a real skiresort, especially for saving time. And for the atmosphere.
Innsbruck is quite a city. No ski-atmosphere really, and distances quite long. And parking??
From Innsbruck you can easily get a train to big names like St.Anton and Kitzbühel to name a few. Much nicer destinations, especially for your novice-girlfriend.

Stubai is small but high and well organised with decent ski shop at car park.
I stayed a few kms back at Neustift a couple of years ago try pension-tina.at.
Very convenient for Innsbruck.

@swskier, Axamer Lizum would be perfect given your GF has only one week under her belt and you are only there for a few days. You could stay in the city and take the free bus there each morning(20 mins), hire in the city as the airport is just on the suburbs. There are other smaller areas accessible from the city too if you wanted some variation. Innsbruck has lots going for it. Stubai is a bit of a schlep on the bus and given what's on the doorstep not really worth the trek unless the snow is really thin on the ground which is unlikely.
