Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria Base for High Resorts

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
4 of us driving to Austria, and start skiing 1st April. We are looking for a base to stay within reasonable (less than 1 hour) driving distance of some different high/snowsure ski areas which we can ski during the week. Last year stayed at a small village near Solden and skied Solden, Pitztal, Ischgl and Obergurgl. Would prefer to stay somewhere reasonably sized with ski atmosphere, but not necessarily a major/expensive resort town. Have considered Hintertux but think all nearby resorts are too low to risk for first week of April. Any ideas really welcome - leaving in 13 days!

Imst could work, Oetz maybe a little better on the 'ski atmosphere' but a little less centralised for travelling? From either, Arlberg, Ischgl, Serfaus, Soelden, Obergurgl, Hoch Oetz and Kuhtai are all pretty close, I think Stubai probably close to your 1 hour limit.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks, good to get what sounds like insider knowledge! Haven't skied Serfaus, Kuhtai or Hoch Oetz. Stubai sounds good - any high and reasonably big ski areas at Innsbruck end of valley? The under an hour travel bit is ideal, but happy to drive if the skiings good.

Marik, Best of the skiing close to Innsbruck is on Nordkette, but it's south-facing so can get iffy late season. I count Axamer, Kuhtai and Stubai as 'at the Innsbruck end,' all pretty snowsure and fairly high, all have good skiing. If you carry on past Innsbruck towards the East, you get to Zillertal (Mayrhofen and Hintertux), Kitzbuhel, SkiWelt etc, all should be good at that time. From Innsbruck it's roughly an hour/only a little over drive Arlberg/etc in the West, Kitz/etc in the East, so would also work as a base. It's a city not a ski resort, but does have a cool vibe. If conditions are good, the Nordkette ski area is accessed by lifts (furnicular then cable car) from the city centre.

I was in Austria two weeks ago, and it was still dumping daily. There is so much snow - even at heights of about 1500, it was ridiculously awesome!

Marik, Landeck? Town within half an hour of Ischgl, St Anton, Obergurgl (I think). Have never stayed there but always thought of it as a decent base to get to various excellent resorts in west Tirol.

Thanks, Landeck looks well placed for lots of high resorts, any idea if it's a ski town/village - bars, restaurants, sports shops, etc? Had a look on googlearth, but cant really work it out from that!
Good to hear there's still loads snow in Austria.

Marik, Landeck is a relatively large town. it's not too bad, but not the nicest place around either. Not a ski town (which is why I didn't recommend it), but for sure conveniently placed! I haven't spent much time there in winter (kayaked lots around there in summer), but I don't think it'll have the atmosphere you're looking for (Imst and Oetz have their own ski areas).

Lanersbach which is the last village before Hintertux. nice ski athmosphere with a few bars and really cheap and its own ski area. also Kappl which is near Ischgl and has its own very good ski area. been to both twice and had a blast.

Here's our webcam pointing at the red piste opposite our apartment, 1200m down to 900m in the village, still loads of snow, so as said before, don't worry about it!

Thanks for all that, have just decided on Oetz - fortunately still an apartment free. Looking forward to trying out lots of new resorts from there.

Marik, whilst you are there make sure you ski Serfaus, a very underrated resort in the U.K. Tremendous ski area for all types of skiers, easy through to challenging. The Germans and Dutch rate it highly.
