Snow Reports
FAQ
Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A snowHead
A massive collection of skiing art, literature and other items of interest opened to the public earlier this year in Mammoth Lakes, California. It's the work of the late Mason Beekley, a wealthy entrepreneur and founder of the International Skiing History Association.
Beekley died two years ago, and - as John Fry reports for
Ski Magazine
in this article just posted up - was generous enough to bequeath this hugely valuable archive to skiers to enjoy.
Quote:
The Beekley International Collection of Skiing Art & Literature ... contains 200 exquisite paintings and sculptures of skiers; 600 posters, some of which now auction for as much as $25,000; magazine covers dating back to the 19th century; unique etchings and lithographs; 2,400 ski pins and stamps; and one of the world's largest libraries of ski books and publications.

David Goldsmith
, Sounds a very interesting collection. In my travels I have come across a couple of ski museums worthy of a visit.
In New Hampshire at the foot of Cannon Mountain ski resort is the
New England Ski Museum
. Interesting museum, particularly the bit describing how just before WWII the great Hannes Schneider from St Anton was allowed (after international pressure was applied) to be released from detention by the Nazis (who had occupied his native Austria) and move to New Hampshire. Incidentally there is also a small museum in St Anton itself which of course covers Hannes Schneider's achievements.
If anyone visits Oslo there is a good ski museum underneath the huge ski jump on the Holmenkollen hill see
this link
. It covers the story of skiing from pre -history (Rodoy cave drawing of
snowhead from 2500BC
) through Nansen's epic crossing of Greenland in th 19th Century to the modern day.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Of course don't forget the Colorado Ski Museum (

) - very handy for the Vail bus station if you have some time to kill.
