Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

insurance for heliskiing?

I have worldwide annual travel insurance with wintersport cover but it turns out that they don't cover heliskiing (planning a few days in Canada). This seems rather silly given that it's got to be safer than off-piste in the Alps.

Any suggestions on good/sensibly priced insurers?

I've used "Snowcard"/"Activcard" heliskiing in the past. IIRC they cover helos as standard, you might need to buy additional cover.

Well... I'd say that, as a huge generalisation, the continental snow pack in Canada is much more complex and potentially dangerous than is the case in Europe but that's not what you were asking about.

BMC (British Mountaineering Council) may not be the cheapest but it covers most things and I have heard good reports of their service when claims are made

I used Fogg to add the Heli/off-piste element to my annual insurance. They told me that it was ok as long as you don't jump from the Heli. In Europe we have always landed but some Ops might just drop a Heli ski onto the mountain and you jump down....

I've never had to do it but I hope that is what Fogg meant..!!!

JT, I used to have a cracking piccie of some fellow leaping from a helo over Alta into some depp deep snow. Maybe that's the plan?

my point on heliskiing in Canad vs off-piste in Alps is that the huge available terrain means that there is no need to take chances - if something doesn't look quite right then you can go somewhere else. In the Alps its much easier to get seduced into taking chances to find a little pocket of powder - even guides with clients take these chances and occasionally pay the price.
