quick question for those that have used polemounts...
Do you attach mount to your normal ski pole and then clip camera on/off when needed?
any other tips?

The one time I've tried it, I just used used the tripod mount for the gopro, and one of those small Gorillapod flexible tripod things wrapped around the end of the pole (tethered the camera to the pole basket). Worked fine, though holding the weight of the camera (and bigger powder basket) out in front was a bit of a pain, and detracted quite a lot from the skiing, though it is by far the best way to capture POV pow skiing.
I want to work out some sort of pole mount going up and back form my backpack, think that would give a pretty cool viewpoint.

clarky999, I've got a contour and helmet mount. For Xmas I got the Contour pole mount, just trying to figure out how to best use it, without the faff of stopping, fitting it, fitting camera etc

We duct taped a GoPro mount arm doohickey to a ski pole cause I left the pole mount attachment at home. That worked really well. 
clarky999, I'm going to take my homemade backpack mount up this weekend to give it a whirl and no doubt get some funny looks. I definitely found that my helmet mount was too much in the line of fire to not get completely blocked almost immediately skiing pow over the last couple of weeks. Sadly that's not a regular peril.

on closer inspections looks like I can mount the mount (clear plastic bit) with two screws, then remove the ball joint when not in use, so hopefully will be simples....

kitenski, and the quick release lever means you you don't have to leave the ball-mount attached to the pole, just the clamp.
I picked up a collapsable pole off Amazon which has a standard camera screw mount on the top, which can turn through 90 degrees.
Works ok, collapses reasonably small, ok for just over a tenner, sadly didn't get much of a chance to get to grips with it at St.Anton though...

I have one for my Drift- as that camera has a 'standard' mount thread, I bought a general purpose camera 'pole' mount for £5 off ebay. the mount weighs about 200grams, and I needed to put some thick tape in the 'claws' so they would grip the end of the pole. The biggest pain is having to set up the camera to point wherever I want it - it's several steps less convenient than having it on my helmet, and just hitting the remote on/off switch.
(as the Drift has a rotatable lens, I have to remember which way will be 'up'. although at least there is instant playback on screen...- factor in about 5 minutes to setup each shot.)

Get an old pole, cut away the handle to expose the top of the pole and use an expansion bolt of the correct dimensions and type to provide a mount point for an adapter to a standard camera screw mount thread - simple. It's not like you are going to be using the pole whilst you ski anyway - that would just make everyone seasick on the playback. It's also the lightest option.
Otherwise gaffer tape sounds like a plan

Yes.
Contour attachment on regular ski pole, just below the hand grip.
Attach the camera there and hold pole by shaft and basket.
Detach camera and mount easy as.

I use a cheap pole mount off eBay (£3-4) and a tripod mount for gopro. Works perfectly.
