Going to zermatt next week, and have a few questions before we go!
We are staying near the klien matthorn lift.
1) as its a six nations weekend can anyone recoomend a good bar for watching rugby.
2) Can someone recommend a Hire shop near there.
3) Can someone reccomend a good ski school/instructor. for a a timid intermediate and b 2 people looking for advanced/off piste.

1. I would check with Sparky at the Matterhorn Hostel first, simply because it is nearer where you are staying. Potters Bar is a Sports bar but is at the other end of the town opposite the main railway station. Sparky is a great guy, does good value drinks and food (by Zermatt standards) and is full of good tips and advice.
2. There are a number of hire shops, prices all pretty similar, you don't say exactly where you are staying but there is a Dorsaz sport right at the lift station, if that helps.
3. For true off piste specialist guiding, I agree the Alpin centre on the bahnhofstrasse is the place. For more mixed lessons/ a bit of off piste and for your intermediate, if you are looking for private lessons, we have had a good experience with AER. They don't do ski school type lessons, but private/ small groups only

Like everything else in Zermatt, wine is not cheap, half price, bogof type deals very thin on the ground (ie non existent!) you don't say where in Zermatt you are staying, but there is a large Coop supermarket in the shopping centre opposite the main railway station, and another large supermarket (Migros) on Hofmattstrasse (opposite the ice rink in the centre of town) Coop sells wine and there is a wine store next to the Migros. Local Swiss wines are the better option, very hard to get outside of Switzerland, and pretty high quality. Look out for Petite Arvine, Johanisberg, Fendant in the white varieties, and interesting reds are things like Dole and Humagne Rouge. My personal favourite is Dole Blanche, a light rose/blush wine, great chilled. As everywhere, each of these will come in a broad range of prices but something half decent ( and I stress I don't have a particularly sophisticated palate, ie, is it cold and drinkable) can be found in the 14-18 franc bracket, or obviously much more if you prefer. There will be the occasional one cheaper than this but it really depends on your taste and wallet.
I don't know what is being offered to you by the chalet company, but the local wines are so unknown in the UK that it probably would be quite good fun to give them a go yourself.

That's a useful website, for comparison purposes at least! Thanks from me for the link, I'll hang on to that! Actually it's interesting to see that the sorts of prices I have seen in Zermatt are actually not that out of line (at the lower end) with what's available on the Migros site. So, a trip to the Coop probably in order at some point during your stay.

BobinCH, many thanks, shows the chalet company to quite reseaonable on the premium wines , with only a chf2 mark up delivered to the fridge

FAQ
but any zermatt experts no what i can expect to pay for descent bottles of local red/white and bubbly , we are self catering for the first time and the chalet co will supply , but just want to check out how their prices compare with the local supermarket or wine merchant , have tried in vain to access local web sites with out joy
