 Poster: A snowHead

Lots of Alpine romance, British skiing history, and some encouragement to go ski touring ... in this piece by Fergus Fleming for The Guardian. It begins thus:

No, not that kind of bear.
The weird thing is ... the author never actually clips on a pair of skis to write the article. The footnote says he wrote 'Killing Dragons: The Conquest Of The Alps', published by Granta Books. Does he ski? Where are these dragons [I thought they were in Wales]?
What else should we ask Fergus Fleming?

If this was about Scotland, I'd call it a shaggy cow story. Very odd piece which is close to being merely a thinly disguised puff for his book. But it does make a change from the run of the mill articles on resorts, equipment, and travel.

Ian, I'm with you there. Didn't want to be too unfair in the opening posting, but the worrying things - from an acknowledged author of a book about the Alps - are the inaccuracies in the article.

Echo that. The good points were the fabulous photos and a concise history of skiing, but it seemed like he'd plundered the Ski Club of Great Britain web site, the objective being to promote the Ski Club "holidays".
A far better piece in the same paper was "Sweet treats and big beasts in Poland" by the 'hungry traveller' Kevin Gould.
Superior penmanship that inspired me to want to visit this part of the world. It wasn't about skiing either.

kuwait_ian, I agree it made a change from the everyday sort of skiing article. I'd read it before David posted the opening message, and thought it pointed out - readably - that there is more to the mountains than what we all too often do ......... queuing for a lift, throwing yourself down a slope, and queuing for a lift again. As a SCGB member, I was pleased to see the Club marketing staff had been on-the-ball, too.

I think he meant to write "Hi de Hi" or "Hi de Ho" or spelling to that effect from the 80s tv show about Maplins Holiday Camp that I can't remember the name of right now.
