We are looking for somewhere reasonably attractive and fairly high so there is snow in the village, plus winter walks for the oldies also suitable for beginners and a liilte bit of night life! is there such a place please?

Alpbach in Austria - one hour from Innsbruck, four circular walks around the beautiful picture postcard village, lots of nightlife and good bars/restaurants. For absolute beginners it's ideal as the baby slopes are in the middle of the village, but only a couple of blue runs up the mountain so not great for second weekers, better for confident intermediates.

we want to go end of jan 2014 but need somewhere with a snowy village as one of our party is a first timer

lynny, Alpbach is a beautiful village, but I think for first-timers it would be good to have somewhere where beginner lessons are held up the mountain a bit. It's great for beginner to be able to get up the mountain, just to see what it's like, and see the views, but also because if it's a bit warm and slushy down in the village (as it was for our beginners, when we went to Alpbach) they can have better snow. Ideally, having a choice of slopes lower down (for nasty cold windy weather) or higher up (for warm sunny days, which can happen in January too) is good. At the end of January you would be spoilt for choice, would normally be good snow cover everywhere.

lynny, Most Austrian resorts that TOs go to are within an hour and a half of either Innsbruck or Salzburg (or both), most of them are fairly pretty, and have *some* nightlife (but not all have much).
Zell Am Zee sounds like it might suit you (although I've never been there, so don't know what the slopes are really like, as opposed to what the piste map looks like).
Ellmau or Scheffau might also suit, although you do have to be a bit careful with some of the blues as a beginner, particularly above Ellmau.
