I have never like composite poles since I snapped one trying to beat the snow off my boot sole. (aged 12yrs, if its any excuse)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I ski Leki (fixed) poles but for what it's worth others here have tried and dislike the release system on the Leki's. For that reason I didn't go for their adjustable version. Have a search for the earlier discussion - it was pretty one sided

I love the Leki trigger systems. have used em for years, essy to clip in, great to clip out of, especially at the chair lift. Will never go back to stupid loops. The Leki system is safer too as it releases in a fall
The adjustable Leki are fine. Folks need to remember they are just like Bicycle quick releases and that you can adjust their tension by spinning the handle. If they slip ist because you didnt do them up properly. been using mine for 2 seasons now and love being able to change the length to match the conditions and to shrink em for carry/stowage

There are composite poles and composite poles. Depends what they are a composite of, so you cant say that all composite poles are bad
I had some nice scott ones that you could almost bend double if you could excert enough force on em. didnt effect normal skiing. I sold em to a friend when I discovered the Leki quick release system. She still uses them and they must be at least 15 years old now
I have seen some cheap and nasty carbon composits that were very brittle, pure marketing to be able to paste the Carbon word all over em without actually having to use more than a few frams worth
Its just like bike frames. The carbon ones are far stronger and lighter than Ali, and should last far longer as carbon doesnt fatigue. However, Carbons failure mode is total, whereas ali softens and bends so it will get you home (still the metal has been altered and its much weaker now)
So those that had composites snap. Name and shame the manufacture, or name the actual composite, you cant just tar all composites under the same brush

Scott P-Core - not sure what the chemicaql composition was/is.
Fair point, though.

I still like the "claymore" grips on my ancient poles (30+ years old) - but I haven't seen them for years. So much so that I won't use poles with straps now, but what I'll do when these ones give out I don't know.
