Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Driving to la tania from which French airport?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello, we arrive in France on a Sunday - April 7th

We have a choice of airport to fly into - Grenoble, chambery or Lyon. Geneva no good due to dodgy flight times from where we live

Does anyone have experience of which airport above will give the easiest experience with hiring a car and which has the easiest drive up to la tania?

Hopefully snow chains won't be needed when we go in April!

Chambery is probably the quickest driving time. However, it can be prone to fog. Having been stuck there for 4 hours once waiting for fog to lift I vowed to fly into Geneva in future. At least there are things to do in Geneva airport.

We have flown into and out of Chambery many times and it is at risk of due to its location, but honestly in over 10 years of travelling through Chambery we have only been impacted once and that was on the return journey with Crystal (other TO's seemed to be getting their customers out.......) Lyon is a safer airport and not really a lot further in terms of driving. It's also better for car hire, you get the bus to the car hire places (a 5 minute bus drive). I'd go for Lyon.

not much less likely than any other time, really - you certainly couldn't afford to be without them or a sharp April shower could find the police preventing your driving up without them. Especially as cars hired from Lyon won't have snow tyres unless you pay extra. Of course it could be warm and sunny (though you hope it won't be, as you're going skiing!).

Rubbish. The freezing level in April is nearly always well above LT's 1400m height, especially during the day. You'd have to be phenomenally unlucky to have enough snow on the road to make LT inaccessible without chains in April, even on summer tyres. I've been in the 3V's at end of season (late March to May) several times (including working 2 seasons full time as a transfer/shuttle driver) and only ever had a problem when accessing the higher car parks in Courchevel 1850 (whose access roads are sheltered from the sun) and in Val Thorens at 2300m (where I had a foot of snow on the car in the first week of May!)

JONR Chambery and Grenoble both have the hire cars right opposite the airport entrance but Chambery is closer. The drive up to resort is the same from both.

thanks everyone. flights booked to Grenoble (better times for us) and car hire sorted (winter tyres) so all should be ok!

JONR, sounds good!

When you return, DO NOT follow the signs to Grenoble from just outside Chambery. Stay on the A43 following the signs for Lyon. Eventually you will see a sign saying Lyon St Exupery airport 41km (ish - can't remember the exact distance) and a junction soon after signposted Grenoble Isere airport. Turn there, it's much quicker.
