Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Garmisch Partnekirchen / Zugspitze

We originally booked a house in Willingen Uplands in Germany, but there was no snow.

We got a cancellation on two apartments in garmisch, so ended up having to drive from Willingen to Garmisch the day after we arrived in Willingen.

We were two families totalling four adults and five boys aged 6 to 13. Two of the boys had never skied before. The other boys were decent beginners/ inters for their ages. Adults all decent inters.

Garmisch is a great resort. There had been plenty of snow prior to our arrival, but recent rain had washed away anything below about 1100 m. So, it was a journey down the cable car at end of day rather than skiing all way down, but didn't mind.

Conditions up the mountain were great. More than enough skiing for our level, although more experienced skiers may prefer longer runs.

One of the days we went to the top of the zugspitze - highest point in Germany at just under 3000 metres with glacier skiing. Conditions here were superb - fresh snow expertly prepared every day.

Prices were very reasonable throughout. A days pass for the five of us, including access to the glacier was 106 euros. A beer at the top of the glacier was 4 euros. The fiver of us had lunch and drinks for about 60 euros which is pretty good value and chice was excellent. Prices on the main mountain runs were very similar. A bowl of erbsen suppe MIT wiener - pea and ham soup with sausage and bread - was only 3.50 euros!

All in all a great family resort for skiers at a decent intermediate level. As long as you don't want twenty different black runs and off piste to choose from every day they've pretty much got it covered. The Germans are great hosts, very welcoming and mostly English speaking.....
