Does anyone else suffer from dry/itchy ankles after a few day skiing? I would put it down to dry skin but it's 10 days later now and I've been putting moisturiser on but it doesn't seem to be getting any better so I'm wondering if it might be a reaction to my new Smartwool socks combined with new super-tight boots. Anyone heard of such a thing before?

Swiss Toby, hmm I've noticed that since wearing Smartwool (and I do like them) that I get itchy feet after a few hours. Drives me mad, makes you want to stick a knitting needle or something down your boot. But stops as soon as take socks off, no rash etc. You could try just using aqueous cream..........

My shins start first, and I get small patches of eczema. Other wool socks do it to. I am going to try some merino wool ones next winter, as the Falke ones are not as warm .

Actually, yes. Since I got a couple of pairs of smartwool socks I've had really itchy ankles.
Similarly, their purchase coincided with new boots though.

Interesting, i have not heard this and have been working with SW for years. Do any of you suffer with Lanolin products?

SMALLZOOKEEPER,not as far as I know . I tried the socks as my feet used to get very cold (not such a problem with my new boots though). It happens with Thorlos wool/silk ones too, and some walking socks I bought, so not confined to when I'm wearing my ski boots. I don't have any probs with my merino thermals. It is more a problem with the fibres I think,than the lanolin thing. merino ones are smoother.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, No. But tend not to wear wool much these days as fleece is so good. I suppose I do find it a bit irritatling next to skin eg on neck.

I use Falke ones mainly cos they are comfy, and being German (I guess?) they are in every shop here. I use SK2 for skiing, plus equivalent for walking and also the cycling equivalent for MTB. Not had any issues with them, but not really compared with anything else. Falke do make a posh version (something like silk and merino), but it costs an arm and a leg for a pair.

May i suggest 'X-Socks' Snow Pro. There is a small amount of Merino, but they are anti-bacterial. I'm wondering whether we have an issue with liners and the synthetics used inside?

Funnily enough they don't itch much while I'm skiing but do so, intensely, after I take them off and, like Swiss Toby, one of my ankles is still itching from the MSB.

I wore my Thorlos ones the week before MSB, so it has cleared up now. Had a look in Slush and rubble earlier for some different ones, but they had nothing decent left.

So, it seems I'm not alone then! Shame, 'cos they seem pretty warm and definitely help with moisture but it's not worth the grief for however long afterwards.
SZK, I have no problems with Lanolin as far as I know but don't tend to wear wool much as I do find it itchy. But, I do wear an ultrafine merino baselayer top and have no problem with that...
BTW, aren't smartwool a merino/synthetic mix?

as SMALLZOOKEEPER has said that is pretty interesting, occasionally people get an itch from old wool but generally the ultrafine merino used in smartwool socks is not a problem
Swiss Toby, the smartwool ski socks are 66%+ merino dependant on the model [more in the thicker ones]..... like all brands they have to put a synethtic mesh to hold the sock together or it wouldn't last long at all. I have just come from a week where i was testing a new merino sock [teko] and they felt just a little softer than the smartwool...not available til next season but wait and see

I have a whole host of them, X-socks, Falke, Therlo and they all aggravate the feet to some degree, IME, shut up in tight boots all day but
nothing to worry about and no discomfort. But then I always always change into dry socks when I take the boots off....

I have used Bridgedale socks for the last 2 seasons, but this season I have the itchy ankle problem too. I thought it coresponded with the new Intuition liners, but I have dry patches above boot level. For 8 of the weeks this season I have been using a liquid "travel wash" Minil Rapide Gel from Migros, I also have similar dry patches at under pants (cotton) level!! and guess what they were also washed in the same product.
I have never shown any previous allergies to theses kind of products, I spent 5 years working in the soap and detergents manufacturing at Lever Bros.

Dypcdiver, Reads as though you are getting sensitised. Suggest hunting down the Spanish equivalent of Dreft (pure soap flakes) until your bod settles down.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Your very likely right with the Lanolin theory. You itchy footed lot - do you have trouble with E45 cream, which also contains Lanolin? What about wool jumpers? Washing powder rarely causes allergy these days but sometimes switching to non bio and ditching the conditioner helps, after 3-4 wash cycles though. Going to Merino wool won't help if you are Lanolin sensitive because...
its still wool!

I'm only getting it on my ankles and lower calves so I'm guessing it's the pressure from boots clamped on all day which makes the difference, at least in my case. No itching on my feet, where the boots are marginally less tight, and I can wear Smartwool socks with walking boots so, er, I guess it must be the pressure combined with a bit of a wool allergy.
