laundryman,
You can do the Sarenne in Alpe d'Huez normally in about the last week of the season, sometimes it is only snow at the very beginning on the glacier but last year I believe it was snow pretty well all the way, 3330m to 1450m. This year it is on the 13th April.

Not done the actual event but I have ridden the first part of the route, on snow. You can try all kinds of "technique" but generally you end up sliding on your backside when it's steep. The first part is the same route as the Megavalanche race in the summer.

skitow, thanks, I've only done pistes without snow on a bike. Don't think I'd be up to competing!

In the 1990s I used to bring my mountain bike to Alpe d'Huez for the week because the snow was often crap, here's a short article and map from 1992, incidentally the very first article on PisteHors.com

We used to make winter ice tires using self tapping screws.

Do they do bikercross? A downhill bmx track on snow sounds great fun (although probably too wimpy thesedays to give it a go )
