briand6868, Hi, it used to be a cheap option for one or two school specialists but I know it often had snow problems, so the groups were often switched last minute. If it is just for race training I think it may be a good option as it is pretty quiet and very cheap.
A friend skis there fairly regularly during the season just to get a quick fix between weekends and longer holidays, so it can't all be bad.

briand6868, I see it on the panorama cameras most mornings in the ski season, so they probably have invested in the necessary technology to cover them, so I would say go for it. Sounds like it could be a good week, especially at that time of year when everywhere else is rammed!

norternh, possibly, I have no idea to be honest, but if they are from that region then the chances are that they did.
Regional training squads for juniors stick fairly closely to the home locations, especially in term time when the children have to be in school. I'm not sure about Hannes Trinkl though, I think he was Schladming based which would put him in Steirmark not Niederösterreich. Just google them in Wiki and if it says they are from that province, then they probably did.

Couldn't find anything on Steiner but Andreas Buder, Kathrin Zettel, Thomas Sykora and Hannes Trinkl looked to have trained at Hochkar.
http://www.cusoon.at/skigebiet-hochkar
Trinkl stayed with the Sykora family in lower Austria, Trinkl says without the Sykora family he wouldn't have had a ski career.
Quote: |

Edit - looks like Steiner could have trained there too as Waidhofen an der Ybbs is only 30 miles away from Hochkar.
Quote: |
Der in Prägraten am Großvenediger aufgewachsene Steiner besuchte die Skihauptschule in Neustift in Tirol und anschließend die Skihandelsschule in Waidhofen an der Ybbs in Niederösterreich. |

norternh, Yes will be there, might have Fattes13 in tow aswell (there are only 2 of us on the team ), staying in the Gotschenalm Friday to Monday, would be great to meet up as this is my first FIS race so will be new to everything
Fattes13, Haven't seen Nikki the northie around lately but both lads as you say are spot on and bloody good racers - think in a dual sl I'd be lucky to get half way down by the time they finish.

briand6868,
I also know here Dad, he was a OK skier racer, a little rusty now i would say, have not seen him for a long time, used to work for him in the winter in Lenzerheide and St. Moritz but the best fun we had on Mt Hermon http://www.skihermon.co.il/en-maslulim.html he was running the ski academy ther and was training the national youth team, skiing in the morning and swimming in see in the afternoon, the next time you see him give him my regards.
I know one of the trainers of the "young lady" Sebastian, great ski racer, won the Arnold Lunn World Cup twice.
Best off luck to you and the Irish Alpine Ski team for 2012/13 and you should bring a few youth to the CIT FIS Arnold Lunn World Cup, great place to get the youth going (little ad for www.fiscit.de)
but Hochkar www.hochkar.at and www.jo-schi.at is good, small and not overrun, as you commentend "you only need 1 slope to train on" and it is a FIS GS & SL run

Popular with daytrippers.

an Irish Girl is training there, U18, for the last 2 years, do you think they can make a Kathrin Zettel out of here?
|
Great Kid, really nice girl and a super skier but still stuck at the 140 mark in FIS points after 2 years on snow.
Thankfully her Dad has the right idea if he wants her to be the best she has to be on snow, but this will be a big year for her and she will need to break the 100 point mark. (Personall opinion)

Couldn't say, I know Hochkar well as it's within two hours drive from here (Vienna) and I used to ski it a lot years ago when I was learning to ski. Tend to ski-tour now and haven't been to Hochkar for quite some time but remembered that a few of the big names learnt to ski on small hills (e.g. Michael Dorfmeister's home hill (Unterberg) was even smaller than Hochkar.

I was told the Irish Ski Team prefers the larger areas such as St Anton, Lech, 3 Valleys and Val for there race training, there is much more action in the resort and better, higher price tag. Hochkar is only a cheap option for the ......!

Fattes13,
briand6868,
Y you are right.
"Great Kid, really nice girl and a super skier but still stuck at the 140 mark in FIS points after 2 years on snow"
The girl could be on 50 points by now if "HE" would have let here go to AUS, NZL, JPN, ARG, CHI, USA and SRB. Points are important for the AUT, GER, SUI, ITA and some other European racers, but for IRE?
I be in Killiney again in Jan, hope there will be snow like the last few years, if YES, i call up to the hill and do some skiing on the Golf Course
Have a nice time in Hochkar, you will like it "Nollag sona agus bhliain nua sásta"
Heads up, look we only have 2 girls in the top 10 this year, it's the year of Tina

Evening All,
Quick review of my training week in Hochkar.
Flew into Vienna and transferred to Hochkar in 2.5 hours, Resort is perfect if you are to do some serious training, we stayed in the Training centre which is a full board training facility at 1500mtrs and has on site every concievable type of sporting activity you could need along with saunas, steamrooms, meeting rooms, relaxation rooms etc, food is good healthy fare typical breakfast,4 course lunch and 2 course tea with attention paid to athlete type diets. there is nothing there except the training centre, 3/4 other gasthofs and a tiny ski shop which means no distractions. The weeks training was conducted by Erich - who is fore-running for the womens speed events in St Anton next week and also for the Hannenkahm in Kitzbuhel so he has good pedigree and also Romy who partners him when not on Austrian team duty. Hard work didn't even come close to what we were put through.Up at 7am for 45mins "gentle" stretching and warm ups, breakfast and quick ski down to the training piste for a 8.45am start. 9am til 4pm with an hour for lunch putting us through our paces made me feel very thankful for all the hours of fitness training over the past year or so. Back to the t/c for a half hour warm down and relax before tea, tea was at 6pm followed by demos, tuning, video analysis and bed by 10pm ready for the next day.Slight probs with headaches the first morning probably brought on by the altitude.
All in all a fantastic week but this was serious stuff which was what I needed/wanted.
Don't think Hochkar is the place for a typical weeks holidays as there are no distractions and only 19km of piste but Gostling down the valley is a lively town with all the usual facilities and the ski bus runs several times a day up and back.
