Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello again
I'm driving from geneva to Morzine.
Google suggests I go off the A40 at junction 15 and take D9 and D907 - it seems like a long way through mountain roads - total time 1hr 15mins
Looking at the map- the Junction 18nr cluses, then D902 looks better - what do people suggest?

Paul Chittenden, option a = prettiest and usually quicker on account of avoiding the Cluses traffic. Not mountain road, more valley roads really. Option b = simpler but usually heavier traffic as it's the more obvious.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Paul Chittenden, go for option a - J15 and the Valley Verte route, we would always avoid Cluses if possible. Just valley road going through small villages. About half way there is a very good Casino supermarket too if you need to stock up.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Paul Chittenden, somewhat counter-intuitively, the D907 is better in bad weather as the road climbs very gently all the way to Taninges, whereas the road from Cluses goes up and down a ruddy big hill.
If it's late at night, early in the morning or visibility is horrible then I prefer the Cluses route as it doesn't require as much concentration. Otherwise I take the D907.

I'd use junction 17 which was new about 2seasons ago, combines less climbs with avoidance of cluses but quicker than vallee verte, plus there's a massive carrefour right by the junction.

Can I resurrect this thread? I assume regular travellers may not want to give away all their secret routes... but it seems avoiding J18 and Cluses has been agreed on. SO is J15 or J17 best? Thanks

I've done both recently and would go with J17, as you are less likely to get stuck behind something.

So going back - as I had a great time last year and I realised Im landing at Geneva on a Satuday morning 10am - will the traffic be hell and is it still the better route - how much longer could it take - excluding poor weather.

Get there before sunday/monday! I like d1005 along the lake past Thonon and then D902 but thats usually going to Chatel. should be about the same time to Morzine tho'. Good supermarche in Thonon to do the weeks shop.
Looking at via michelin thats what they say. No need for the autoroute at all.

You know it makes sense.

andyrew, definitely quicker coming off at vallee verte (j15) or for Marignier (j17) or cluses (j15) than going via Thonon.
