Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

What angle to edge my skis?

Got a nice new edging tool for Xmas and wondering what degree to edge all our skis? Tool goes from 0-5 (ie 90 to 85 degrees). Ta much.

boabski, i use 3 degrees side on everything, does not go dull too quick, and seems to grip well on hard packed stuff. Make sure the side wall does not get in the way when doing the side edge.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

boabski, You first need to find the current edge angle. You can probably do that from the manufactures web site. Most are 1 degree but some are different i.e my Icelantic Pilgrims are 3 degrees from the manufacturer. I'd use that angle but you can use a larger edge angle but you may not be able to achieve this with just your edging tool. You may well need a file to achieve this to remove the amount of edge needed to increase the angle. You may also need a sidewall trimming tool to remove some of the ski sidewall to allow the edging tool to work correctly at the new angle.

You'll find lots of useful information here: http://www.jonsskituning.co.uk/

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If your tool is adjustable (rather than presetable) then my top tip is to check the angle EVERY time you use it. Several times I've been merrily grinding away only to find later that the setting had slipped. I've switch to using an SKS tool with 1/2/4 degree wedges that you swap in and out. Far more reliable.

If you're unsure what the existing angle is then cover the edge in ink from a felt pen. Then rub away gently checking to see that you're taking away all the ink. Adjust angle accordingly.

I always to a 3 degree edge these days. Much better in icy conditions and no different in soft. Doesn't seem to wear noticeably quicker.

All mine are now set to 3. I got Jon to reset all my new ones a few months ago. The one time I tried to reset the angle myself I made a mess of it.
