Disqualified Austrian ski racer to sue supplement provider

Hans Knauss, the World Cup ski racer who is banned from competition for ingesting steroids, is to sue the maker of the nutritional supplement concerned.

Knauss's 18-month ban has forced him out of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Having lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) he feels that he has a case:

“I will not fight the CAS decision anymore, but I will definitely sue the company that produced that crap," Knauss told [Austrian] state broadcaster ORF on Thursday. "My major problem is that I am Austrian. They are probably content to have finally found a scapegoat, a winner of the dominant Austrian ski team they could sacrifice." he continued.

I wonder did Knauss ask the medical staff to the Austrian ski team to check out this supplement before consuming it? Was it part of the nutrition programme that I assume the Austrian team recommend/insist on? If I remember correctly he bought the supplement via the internet - that seems like a risky strategy to me given the drug-testing regime.

Absolutely! Surely any foodstuff/supplement must be labelled with all ingredients - so the presence of Nandrolone would have been evident?

Maybe there's more to this than seems obvious.

Three months since Ski Racing first reported Hans Knauss's intentions ... they now report that he has hired a prominent American sports lawyer to fight his case that he inadvertently fed on contaminated nutritional supplements.

The lawyer involved, Howard Jacobs of Los Angeles, says that he has already sued Ultimate Nutrition - the makers of the supplement - on behalf of a US swimmer, Kicker Vencill.
