binkacat, ...so far the usual rule seems to apply...low proportion of skiing-related...
2003 courcheval sounds really cr*p - that must have been so incredibly frustrating....

Courchevel wasn't too bad. Last day of the holiday, I was knocked out. Came round to many excitable French people shouting and going on. Picked myself up, went back to the chalet. Told Other half I thought I'd hurt my neck, he told me to get a grip and we went skiing. Only found out it was broken back in the uk!
Broken leg in la plagne was worse. Third day of the holiday.

2011 hairline crack in ankle- skiing, caught edge, landed with tail of ski pointing upright, somehow binding failed to eject so I was hanging from my ankle. Weird was going 2mph towards lift line on flat!
2012 coccyx amputated (long non ski story)
badly burned wrist- dog pushed me in the oven.

robapplegate, ...not really, I was just trying to come up with something ski-related.
Last year I arrived at the meeting place to drop off wee one with ski school and spoke to the owner who is good friend - he noticed the rip on the base of my thumb from where you take the skin off if you slip when manually sharpening edges. Of course, it's always just healing when you slice it off again, in exactly the same place. He took off his glove and showed the exact same injury. At that point, about 5 of the instructors all waved their bloodied hands in the air, all cut in exactly the same spot...

Broken Ribs - falling over drunk.
Broken Toe - dropping a full bottle of wine on it (while drunk).
Broken toes and sprained ankle falling down the stairs (surprisingly while sober).

Just this year:
June - Badly sprained ankle which still gives me a hard time in the morning. Reduced ROM in the ankle. Probably should get it looked at again. Fell 2m rather awkwardly onto a bouldering mat whilst bouldering.
Weekend before last - Bruised/Cracked Ribs on my ski pole thanks to flat light and very direct, hidden change in slope angle (went from about 40 degrees down to 10 degrees up with zero transition).
Last week - Three stitches on my elbow from clocking a rock with it.
Three days on skis so far this season so things are not looking good.

1995 - severe whiplash, two fused vetebrae (hit from behind by Securicor van)
1997 - broken right ankle (caught foot in camber of curb while running for bus)
2003 - broken wrist (knocked off bicycle by white van)
2005 - cracked ribs (fell down concrete stairs in Morzine. Leathered, obviously)
2006 - destroyed cartilage in ankle joint, split talus longus tendon (dropped off small cliff onto submerged tree trunk)
2007 - 2011 patella tendonitis (have subsequently given up running)
2008 - light concussion (tomahawked out of powder into sticky clag)
2010 - badly sprained thumb (caught between ladder and side of pool at the EOSB)
2012 - chipped elbow, i.e. I've taken off the pointy bit (sustained falling over and saving bottle of wine in hand instead of putting hands out)

1989 - had face sewn back together after pretending to be Greg Lemond cornering at speed on a sandy road
2010 - camelbak chest cross-strap buckle thing and an MTB OTB was quite sore on the rib cage
2012 - stuck finger in rotating MTB brake disc whilst building bike while under the influence of about 3 JD's (99% healed now, fortunately)

The major ones that can actually be counted:
- 1992 Badly weakened shoulder by jumping off a wall trying to catch a lamppost to slide down, and missing, oops
- 1992 Broke wrist on rollerblades (learned in Canada, bought in UK when first kicking off, wrist-guards hadn’t caught on yet!)
- 1996 Tore ligaments in shoulder while asleep (no idea how, but surely related to top antic)
- 1998 Put back out after a particularly hard week of Gaelic training, trying to re-school a very headstrong horse no one else would handle (even the guys), and a couple of vicious badminton matches in a club tournament. Don’t know which one did the final damage – probably the Gaelic training
- 2012 Concussion after falling on skis and cracking my head (fortunately was wearing a helmet). I don’t remember how it happened.
- 2012 Badly twisted/sprained knee after another fall on skis – a witness very quickly called ski patrol, but I only found out when I skied past them a few minutes later
The 2000’s included less severe injuries:
- Many many sprained ankles from all sorts of stuff – mostly hiking and badminton (did the 3 Peaks challenge, sprained one on the first peak, another on the second, and was very happy there was a physio in the group…). My ankles are weak, I’m ok with it now, I ignore them
- Many scars from falling (skiing and other), crashing while mountain biking, a racehorse bolting and running me into a thorn hedge, skidding on gravel playing various ball games etc.
- And many bruises, a few temporarily loosened teeth, and a loosened jaw from kickboxing. Nothing broken though.
The injuries have actually dropped off a lot in the past couple of years, I really must start getting out more again!

I feel obliged to re-post my first ever snowheads post:
1 x broken collar bone - football
1 x cracked elbow - football
2 x broken nose - fight at school and football
3 x broken fingers - cricket and football
1 x contusion on the base of my spine/iliac joint - skiing the morning after a 12 hour bender in Austria
1 x contusion on the inside of my right patella - skiing too hard for my age (according to the specialist)
1 x knocked unconscious/concussion - skiing (wiped out by a p*ssed up Russian in Courchevel)
1 x cracked rib - skiing after a heavy lunch
1 x nastily twisted right hip that has given me various degrees of sciatica for the last 10 years - skiing collision (when sober!)
1 x strained ACL - skiing crash while avoiding sat down snowboarder over a ridge
2 x dislocated right shoulder including 1 x humerus fracture, 1 x SLAP lesion, 1 x torn tendon - both skiing while trying to protect the problem below
and the piece de resistance...
30 x dislocated left shoulder - only 2 of which are skiing but the first of which was my 5th day ever on snow! 2 are football (the original injury which finished that sport for me) and the rest are cricket, sleeping, watching TV, falling over, closing a car door, reversing a car, sex, weight training, testing it (hadn't healed!), too much beer and I forget what else. It was 27 prior to my second operation in 2003 and it came out 3 times after but I now consider it 95% healed. Just need a bit more work on the right one to strengthen it.
So the moral of the story is... too many of my skiing injuries involve alcohol but it's not ALWAYS mine so I now only have a demi at lunch and never ski home after apres. At least not down a frozen bump field in the dark anymore (that's how I did the right shoulder )
On the plus side I know an awful lot about shoulder rehabilitation if anyone wants any help

You must be Martin Riggs.....
I seem to have led a charmed life so far compared to some of you -
1980 broke both arms first week of the summer holiday when I fell into a tree
1996 unzipped lumbar area of back when picking up a Beetle chassis
2005 angle grinder just kissed my thigh and opened up the muscle lengthways a touch
2012 face planted skiing in Northern Finland and GoPro on (wooly hatted) head took off goggles and gouged top of nose out (Moral is always wear a helmet)
Hopefully the coming ski season will be injury free....

Aaghh! Every time that film comes on I get asked, "Is that what you used to do?"
"No, it bloody isn't! Banging your shoulder against a locker only fixes a dislocated shoulder in Hollywood."
Elsewhere in the world you need at least a ski pole or preferably a table.

you people are so clumsy.
I never broke a bone in my life until New Years day 2011. Was helping the kids onto the top lift in Orelle and reached out behind me to grab the chair. Slightly mistimed the grab and broke middle, index and pinkie on my right hand. There were little bluebirds and stars going round my head all the way up the lift. Self diagnosed a bad stave, but had to give in a couple of weeks later and seek medical advice. Fingers were just about healed by March 2011, so I went off with the lads on a ski/drink trip to Chamonix. One of them asked me how I could manage to break three fingers getting on a lift, so I showed how. I didn't actually mean to break them again, but I did. Self diagnosed another bad stave, as there were no bluebirds this time. Got back home - x-ray revealed 5 breaks in different places to the other 3. Had a few sensible months and was back in VT for Christmas 2011. New years day we decided to pop over to Orelle. I should have known better - same lift - same result.
So my tally is
1 100 MPH plus motorbike crash - bruises
1 40 MPH motorbike crash - bruises
1 totalled 5 series - bruises
1 totalled Impreza with several rolls - bruises
getting hit hundreds of times with a hurl - bruises
getting on 2 ski lifts - 11 broken bones
The message is clear - speed doesn't kill. Ski lifts do!!

1990 - Road cycle crash (multiple pile up) - cuts, scrapes and several borken teeth)
