Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Whats Skis?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Im an intermediate, been 5yrs out of 6, go down everything but prefer going down hard blue/easy reds. Not into mogules.

Im joining a dry slope and will be using that a lot, and am now looking for my own skis to use once/twice a year.

I find shorter skis are easier to turn when going down narrow/varying runs (Le Canyon in Alpe D Huez springs to mind), very narrow, some fast, some ice thats steep.

Any reccomends for me, ive seen some ex rentals on ebay after 20 days use, looking around 165cm? Im 175cm tall, 85kg ish, hope to be nearer 75kg generally though.

Id like to maybe do more jumps, but nothing too heavy, just continue getting more proficient, and a bit faster down some of the challenging reds and blacks.

Ive seen some Salomon 24hrs and X Kart on ebay, ex rentals from Austria £240....?

Any suggestions please!

If you are only skiing one/two weeks a year it's probably not worth buying your own skis (and servicing/carriage) - better to spend it on boots and lessons.

Sarny, are you looking to use the new skis on the dry slope too?

If you are going to be doing a lot on a dry slope you might improve pretty quickly - and so your ideas about what you want might change. New skis won't make you go

for that you need better technique - and it's often harder to go slowly down a challenging black than to go fast!

For once a year, it's questionable whether it's worth having your own skis, by the time you transport them, have them serviced, etc.

twice a year and a lot of dry slope action, probably weekly for 3-4months a year.

I already have boots and have had plenty of lessons.

I mentioned I want some skis that will develop a bit with me, as in, not ones im going to outgrow in a year!

Sarny, If you want to hone your skills on the dry slope a shorter radius slalom type ski will probably be better as they react better and give a more snow like feel in terms of grip, they are more sensitive to the skiers input and will give better feedback, they also give you the option of carving tight narrow corridor turns, a bonus if the dryslope isn't very wide, you could use for snow as well but tbh you will most likely want a longer radius set for all over the mountain, or just buy and take both. Some bloke on ebay who sells ex rentals is saying get the Elan Waveflex 10? Brand new!
http://www.rentforfun.eu/de/Skis-New-/Elan-Waveflex-10-2012-Model-New-168-cm

As opposed to some second hand ones, when I said Id prefer second hand, he said Salomon X Karts?

The Elan Waveflex 10 is beginner to advanced ski. The Rossignol Alias Carbon 74 (2012 Model) is a similar ski to this but is reportedly even better in short turns.

The Salomon X-Kart is an "Expert" ski and will probably be too much for you.

Sarny, I bought some head wc sl skis from that eBay guy in Austria...mine arrived in very good condition in about 3 days, no guarantee but I would use again, the two skis from the spec are quite different, the x kart would act like an easy going slalom ski giving nice easy turns on steeper runs but possibly a trade off going at speed "relatively speaking" and would possibly suit your need, don't know much about the elans but they are more of a general piste ski with a turn radius of nearly 15 mtrs.

Im just an average skier who follows his mates, but is going to work to get better, and need some skis for right now, see what i tend to do later, are the X Kart smaller turns? Are they pretty good at like £280 delivered?

The x karts have a 12 mtr turn radius so in theory will be easier to carve cleaner tighter turns at slower speeds, you still need to be at a reasonable level to do this but will make it easier, you can still do similar short turns on the elans 15mtr radius but there would need to be a little more rotary steering/edge slip involved which isn't a bad thing either, just really depends on the type of skiing you like, £280 is still quite a bit of cash for skis you've never tested, try to get to a dome/dryslope and see if you can demo/borrow skis with differing turn radius and see which you like best. I use a slalom ski 11/12mtr on dryslopes and domes and something around 15mtrs+ on the mountain, well I take both sets but generally more time is spent on the latter.

Thanks - I can carve just about (barely) on easier runs, but not once they get more difficult...

Ive had many rental pairs, cant say Ive ever had a pair and thought "these are so much better than the last", I just dont want to keep forking out rental costs and On the dry slope i want to be getting used to ones i own.

The X Karts - DB - you make it sound like i wont be able to use them at all? Cant be that much diff?

Sarny, Get the Sally 24 Hours. Good ski, not bad price. It's forgiving enough to develop your skills, technical enough to make you work at it. Either that, or I've got some 186 cms Salomon Equipe 2V Race with 914 bindings that would be perfect for you, in a couple of years. snowHead

If someone takes on a ski that is too much for them (got the T-Shirt after picking up some cheap 186cm long stiffer skis on ebay - I'm only 5'8").

1. You tire out much quicker

2. When you make a mistake the skis are less forgiving - meaning rather than just losing control of the turn the skis trip you up and throw you on the floor.

3. It's harder to make a turn (especially at low speeds) and a lot harder to make a carved turn.

In short the rider gets tired, frustrated and possibly injured (or ends up injuring someone else).

It's hard to say what your level is over the internet but you have said you can't carve on more difficult runs. Have you got any clips of your skiing you could put up?

Sarny, wot DB, says and it's NEVER about the skis, it's the skill of the skier. There are few snowHeads, me certainly NOT included, that can consistently approach the limits of any mid range ski and having spent a day on a pair of production race Atomic (club race level) . . . I had 5 minutes of orgasmic pleasure and 5 hours of juddering misery. The waveflex design is probably ideal to progress on and have a good rep for quality and durability. 165 will take you everywhere on the hill and if you get to 75Kg will also allow some off piste without submarining.

edit: NOT INCLUDED

Sarny, practice, practice, practice . . . when you can define and explain the difference in performance of skis, then is the real time to buy but in the meantime just about anything in the mid range, mid size and mid price of all the major players will suit you fine. I'd suggest keep renting till you find a marque that suits you body mechanics otherwise just don't fret about it.

Sarny,

There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of different ski models out there. If you are not really feeling a difference with the rental skis it probably won't make much difference. Sounds like you need a beginner to advanced ski. See what's available and do a search on google to see if there are opinions / ski tests available.

An "expert" ski won't make you an expert skier.

The Salomon 24hrs was the ski that lifted me out of beginner level, around trip no. 4 or 5, and made me think much more about my techique. Asskimastaaah, says, it will reward you, but not as much as the Head supershape Magnums that I tried next; both great intermediate piste skis.

Sarny, as you can see...different people have very different views on the same ski, the only way to find out what suits you best is to test them yourself, but if you are only renting mediocre middle of the road skis then you may not feel much difference in them, maybe rent your normal skis on the next trip but for one of the days take out some slalom skis and see if you like them. I skied on a set of head sl skis for the whole of my second week and loved them, I did practice on them on the dryslope right through the previous summer though, so wasn't a problem.

Sarny, I got some Nordica Speedmachines in a 178 cms for sale on the For Sale/Bargains thread. Brand new, medium flexing, piste orientated, with adjustable bindings. These will defo get you build your technique, and be forgiving enough to help you develop. You may think they are a tad long for you, but at 85 kgs you'll be spot on for them as these suit a lighter skier. snowHead

Q................ WTF u ski on???????????????? Toofy Grin

It depends really on the conditions, today I did a small tour up the back of Stuhleck (about an hours drive away from here) so I was on my old touring setup.

Wasn't really enough snow to get the powder touring skis or my freeride skis out. Could of done with my piste skis once we dropped over the other side of the hill to the ski resort though.

What did you ski today?

PS I don't know how to break this to you but ..... well have a look at the test yourself.
