marcellus, not as uncommon as one might think. I once had to dig a friend out of a snowdrift that he had faceplanted into. Had I not been there I think the outcome might have been similar to this one. We laughed a lot about it at the time, but actually it was quite scary.

marcellus, Tree wells or deep snow immersion claims about 4 victims a year in the US, and in tests 90% of people cannot self extract either.
Having been tree-welled myself, it's a bit of a soap box issue for me.

mmm yes I know guys, most of us will have been there but I was thinking that the majority of these times is when we're perhaps pushing it by playing off piste or tree hopping so we've increased the risks..
It appears as though this girl hadn't and just managed to catch an edge whilst on a well groomed piste.

This was posted on SCUK in response to the same tragedy and when tree well came into conversation - didn't even know there ws such a thing as a tree well, so it's at least raised my awareness to another hazard.
