Hi Skids, I'm trying to put together our extended family bash. The preferred venue this year is Arabba, because I've never been there and its a must do while I still can.
We think we've found the right sized and almost right priced apartments.
But …. Although it’s a great location we are going to have a 10 month old baby with us.
Someone is going to have to be “nanny”.
Is it a place that Granny & Co can grab a gondola up to the dizzy heights to meet & greet the gang at lunch time?
Also does it have enough local skiing that we can centre upon without charging around the “Ronda”?
Or is granny going to be "pizza'd off" waiting for her shift change till the end of the day.
If anyone has experience of these factors we would be glad to hear your views.
Ski week is 27th January!

DrLawn, Have been to Selva a couple of times with my pretty fit, mid 70s 'outlaws'. As much as we tried to include them, they did get a little bored. Also, one off lift passes are crazy money when compared to a week pass.
I suppose it'll depend on Granny and what she requires inorder not to get bored. Six days of 9-5 childcare should keep her pretty busy.

Arabba is IMV about the top spot on the Sella Ronda... if you're a skier!
That's why it works great for the Birthday Bash, because our group is primarily there to ski and provides the social/entertainment for itself.
The town itself doesn't have a great deal going on so I don't think it would be a great spot for non-skiers to spend the week.
Selva/St Christina/Ortisei, or to a lesser degree Corvara, would be better, being bigger towns in themselves.

Thanks for the reply Mollerski !
Well I'm the old phart in this bunch but I really want "Granny Lawn" to enjoy herself, she can ski too, but she'll also enjoy "rock the babE" to a certain degree.
But if she's feels she's being dumped on, and dosent see us all day for a bit of a break and a nice lunch she aint going to want to do that again.

Mollerski, re. lift pass prices - one benefit though is that U can pay for lift rides individually so don't need a full day pass to just take a couple lifts to get somewhere.

Cheers Admin!
I tried to get them worked up about the Kronnenplatz bash ... but they felt like they were "too out of it"
My gut feeling is that its going to have to be back to La Thuile so that we can tick all the boxes for this year at least.
Then we should get our fingers on the trigger a bit earlier for the "Arabba Bash" next year.
What are you doing on your puter today then Graham? .... Should be down the pub ..as we should ...but we've been left holding the baby!

admin, Agreed, but the per lift prices are eye popping. My Inlaws paid, from memory, somewhere in the region of 60Euro to get them from St. Christina to Seceda and back down for Xmas day lunch. A few single trips within a weeks stay got pretty close to the cost of an unlimited 6 day pass.

DrLawn,
That's about it. Arabba doesn't offer as much as say Selva, as a stand alone resort.
I actually prefer Selva to Arabba for several reasons, it has multiple ski ins and outs, plenty going on in village and is well located for all other villages. I could be skiing Arabba, having set off from Selva, in around 30mins, if I cracked on.

We'll look into Selva then, but next year perhaps.

Hello
As two families with teenage children we love Arabba, but there is only really a cable car and gondola, both to the Portavescovo, where non-skiers can meet skiers for lunch, although there are a couple of good places to each at the bottom of the Burz chair in the village too (Mickey's Grill and Mr X). You can ski different areas each morning and come back to Arabba for lunch, but I wouldn't want to do that every day as there is such a huge area out there to be enjoyed. Arabba itself has very little for non-skiers to do.
The best place we have ever been for meeting non-skiers is Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Most of the lifts from the valley floor to the peaks are gondolas suitable for non-skiers and the whole valley is served by a very efficient free bus service. We have a non-skiing mum in our group and she was able to meet us somewhere different most days. There's also a lot more for non-skiers to do there.
Wherever you end up the Dolomites, you will have a fantastic time. It's worth checking out Colletts holidays (www.colletts.co.uk) as they specialise in Corvara, Arabba and Badia. They give a great service at a very reasonable price.
Can't wait for our trip to Arabba at Feb half-term, staying at the Hotel Alpenrose as usual!

Hi FionaG and thanks for that,
Yes thinking about it Saalbach would be a good choice, It all (or most of it) comes back into the central bowl and it wouldn't take too long to get back from Leogang either.
I took our gang when they were just kids there in 1992, then we stayed in the Jauserstation that doubled as a tobogganing venue.
They loved it then.
But they are getting big ideas now ... the latest is to go to Sankt Anton a great place, but I think its going to be a tough time for who ever holds the Baby, for the reasons Saalbach would be good.
They have developed a fondness for MarkWarner ....
So now I've got to look for apartment for 2+1 in the Naserine end of Stanton, then find flights that will take the kit as well
I hope you have a great time at half term ... one day I'll get there

Hi
I hope you found something suitable for your trip. We just had a great short break in Fiss, one hour from Innsbruck (and very close to St Anton). Lots of challenging skiing (not many blues, mostly reds), but plenty of gondolas for the non-skiers. Also loads of winter walking paths suitable for pushchairs, and play areas of the little ones. Might be worth looking at for next year. Highly recommended for a short break too.
Gearing up for Arabba now!
Fiona

Hi Guys and Gals!
Thanks for keeping this post going for me ...
We still haven't decided .. Actually its caused a bit of a row in the family
I suspect my daughter and granddaughter + hubby have sneaked off on their own to France some where ...
So we don't have to worry about them any more.
So Granny & Grandad can just please ourselves now ... So perhaps we can go to the Dolly Mite on our own now after all.
Grab a Granny night .. just like the "con club" happy hour!
Which reminds me ... must dash.

Hi pam w,
Your confused .. we're confused ....
When I first posted this over Christmas my daughter was all up for an extended family ski bash ...
but over the ever lasting Yule tide having three generations of the Lawn women under one roof seemed to cause a bit of friction,
so much so that a big sulk descended mostly caused over the failure to agree on a ski venue.
The priority seemed to change from Cheep & Cheerful as chips to super extravagant with hot and cold running nannies.
Then total breakdown.
I have a feeling that my daughter and granddaughter are nannyfied living it up in France somewhere in the Val d'Oligarki
while us sidelined bus passers are left low and dry in the East Anglian fens !
Don't worry we'll get over it, its only a family thing.
