We are a family of 4 (children aged 19 and 17) fairly proficient skiers looking to book our annual holiday in February half term.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a resort with a big selection of runs with a lift pass that isn't too expensive.
I understand this may be difficult as the more runs, the more expensive the pass is likely to be, but any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Cheap tix = cr*p or tiny resort.
Bulgaria is cheap.
Some parts of Italy, Austria and Andorra are cheapish. Livigno is an example.
Pay the extra on a creditcard. Go to Switzerland. Verbier. Your offspring will thank you for a lifetime.

valneedham, fond as I am of France, I would tend to go somewhere else at half term, which coincides with the 4 week French holiday. The Espace Diamant (Les Saisies etc, 185 kms of piste) has a cheaper lift pass than many places (€184 adult 6 days) and if you stayed in Notre Dame de Bellecombe you would escape the worst of the crowds (which are in Les Saisies itself) but you'll struggle to get accommodation now during that time; stuff still available might be vacant for a reason.
Are you planning to drive? Flights are v expensive now, too. If you are just doing one holiday it might be worth thinking about Easter. You will find a much bigger choice of less expensive accommodation and Easter is early this year.
If I were you I would look at Italy.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

valneedham, In France you won't get reductions for for your kids unless some of the resorts family passes cover them that old (I doubt it). Can be different in Austria, Switzerland, etc where reductions can apply up to 20/21. Agreed that Les Sybelles prices are good, or they were last time I went in 2007.

they'll get reductions if they are students. Are you teachers? Is that why you are stuck with half term?

not everywhere and I suspect that generally isn't the case

It is in Les Saisies, which was the one I quoted, but it's not a huge reduction. There is a "family pass" too but it's only for kids under 18, which reduces the cost to about €144. But I wouldn't advise France in holiday time anyway, there just seems little point when there are less crowded resorts elsewhere.

Prett sure Chamrousse is free lift pass all season (with Crystal, not sure if that is with other TOs) and Risoul is cheap too -

pam w, at half term this year Mrs A and I visited several resorts in the Maurienne valley:
http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=1995912
Only St Francoise Longchamp on the last day seemed anything like busy - and that was probably because the crap weather was cramming everyone onto the lower slopes.
Here's Albiez Montrond on Tuesday (I think two of those boarders are the same one that moved) - hardly rammed!

You could look into Val Cenis and the upper Maurienne valley which was good value when I skied there some years ago. Went by car, self-catering with friends and skied a couple of the other small resorts in the valley.
You might find Italy cheaper for day to day living. Having a car opens up the Aosta valley, but there's still plenty of skiing at my local hill Pila:

Val Cenis is around £120, tree skiing, cruisey blues and reds, accessible offpiste, 120km, enough for a week.

We were in Val Cenis last Easter and got free ski pass and hire of boots and skis in with accommodation price..La Margerie apartments

Crystal are throwing in free lift passes for La Clusaz and La Plagne.
They're also doing lots of BOGOF deals and kids free deals

As valneedham is a relative newcomer here, is someone going to explain to her that Whitegold can safely be ignored, indeed it is compulsory to do so?
Oh ... I've done it now

This underlines the fact that you need to look at overall holiday costs, not simply at lift passes. The range of child and family discounts are available is a bit bewildering.

Isn't it more a question of 'where can I find some accommodation' during half term? If you want to travel with a tour operator (TO) then you might be struggling, let alone being able to be picky about lift pass prices
Meribel /3v is running a 'pass tribu' scheme this year - http://www.les3vallees.com/en/pass-tribu.323/ which should save yer 60 euro for the week

altis, that's a really useful link, thank you! We've booked for Austria already but are thinking about an extra child free week late season if we can wangle it annual leave/ financially/childcare wise.
