Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Injured knee, please recommend me a specialist

My fellow Snowheads,

about 3 months ago I was doing some squats. I wasn't using good form, my weight wasn't on my heels, but on the balls of my feet. This allowed my knees to travel forward of my toes...

Coming up from a very deep squat, I felt a dull but intense pain in my left knee. With difficulty, I still finished the exercise (dumb thing to do, I know).
After that, I stoped the gym altogether.

I carried on skiing at Hemel once a week. Post skiing, I would have trouble going up/downstairs (particularly downstairs).
But after about a couple of months my knee got better enought to allow me to go on a ski trip (or so I thought) Toofy Grin
Actually, the knee didn't hurt too much, though at one point I knelt on it and felt a very sharp pain. This caught me by surprise, as I've not knelt on it since the injury.

Following the ski trip, the pain has increased. However, now it's accompanied by a popping sound when bending/extending my leg. It's louder when I'm bending it, and it's quite disconcerting. The stairs are still a problem.

I am scared that I might inflict some more (possibly even permanent) damage to it if left unchecked.
I am particularly worried as the EoSB is looming ever larger, and I desperately want to go...

As time is of the essence (due to the proximity of the EoSB), I wouldn't mind going to see someone about this privately but, needless to say, excellent credentials are imperative.

Please help! snowHead

@Michelle63,

The cause is partly age dependant simply because arthritis is may be relevant if you are over 45/50.

However pain exacerbated by the stairs, crouching and kneeling is highly likely to involve the kneecap

This is basically exactly what my problem feels like.
(I've quated Dr. Bell from another thread as I was loath to hijack the thread from th O.P).

When I put my hand on the offending knee and bend/extend my leg, I can feel a lot of crunching going on, what feels like it's underneath my knee cap.

@pam w, no, I was really stupid. I started taking chondroitin/glucosamine complex and was hoping it'd get better (it's always helped me before with any knee problems).
However, this time it's starting to feel as though there's some physical damage in there.

that's probably one of the least likely outcomes.

If you're some distance from Wimbledon, or a different knee doctor, no harm seeing a good sports physio which'll only cost you about £50.

They will be able to recommend exercises (and show you how to do them properly) and strengthening the muscles is always a good idea, even if ultimately you did need surgery.

Good luck with a diagnosis and recovery. Knees are tricky things!

@pam w, I'm not far from Wimbledon at all, probably about 20-30min drive.
Do you know if it would be better to pm Dr Bell on here, or give his clinic a call and ask to speak to him?

Thanks @rob@rar, unfortunately, I've had more than my fair share of sports injuries (joints reconstructed, metalworks inserted, bones broken, tendons ruptured), so I'm only too aware where this could go. Crying or Very sad

I hope not this time though, and, just like @pam w said, that it'll be treatable by a course of few intense physio sessions Little Angel

Not holding my breath though...

@snowglider, you might consider doing what I did, which was to consult Claire Robertson at Wimbledon Clinics first. She is a sports physio and a skier. I was very happy with her diagnosis and prognosis, especially when she told me that there were several stages for me to go through before I was likely to need Jonathan's knife skills. (She is his wife. I am happy for her to guide me on the timing of seeing him. She also gave me exercises to deal with my symptoms, which aren't dissimilar to yours.) I consider myself very fortunate to live within easy reach of Wimbledon Clinics.Despite having arthritic knees and being of advanced years, I feel confident that they'll keep me skiing for a while longer. Very Happy

@Hurtle, that is heart - warming to hear! Thank you very much!

Because of my previous (severe) injuries that I was unfortunate enough to sustain, I became somewhat sceptical about physio treatment (when it comes to major injuries), as it often did very little for me in the past. Only knife ever made things better for me Sad
But it's encouraging to hear of your positive experience. Smile

What I'm minded to do then, is to give both Jonathan and Claire a call and very quickly describe my symptoms to them, and they'll work out between them whom I need to see Smile

The thing is, if this is eventually going to require surgery (further down the road), then I'd prefer to have it sooner rather than later - while my powers of recovery are higher Smile

We'll see what they both think Smile

Thanks very much again! snowHead

@snowglider, PS I didn't actually get any treatment from Claire, I consulted her primarily for her diagnostic skills.

Cheers @Hurtle, again, good to hear that.
Accurate diagnosis is key to a succesful treatment. I'll be sure to report back on how it went.

@snowglider,

From the description of your injury you probably would be able to best see a physio first. It's sounds like it could be patella femoral.

Claire is a patella specialist. If she thought you needed a scan she could guide you to getting that sorted out. She would have a good idea of whether you needed a surgical opinion ( sounds unlikely).

She is also cheaper than me.

Here is her blog http://www.wimbledonclinics.co.uk/blog/consultant/11/#.VtKq8vDfWrU

@Jonathan Bell, thanks very much for responding so fast! I really appreciate it very much.

I know you're only going by what little information I had provided, but it is encouraging that you think a surgical opinion isn't likely to be needed - yayyy! Smile

I shall contact Claire tomorrow, well, practically today - (considering the time of writing) Smile

Dr @Jonathan Bell,

Try as I might, Claire is proving to be pretty elusive! The earliest slot I can get is April the 13th Shocked

As I mentioned in my original post, I am desperate to go to the EoSB in April, so that would simply be too late (I was hoping to be well on the mend by then).

Might you have a slot to see me any sooner? Hopefully you won't be terribly more expensive than Claire? (I know - cheeky) Laughing snowHead
