Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

North Pennines 2012/13 - Allenheads, Harwood, Weardale and Yad Moss

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
First day of the season has happened so time for the new season thread. I'm mostly in Scotland this year so someone else is going the to take on the mantle of photographer of all things Pennine.

Poor skiing was apparently had at Weardale on Monday December 3rd 2012 - acording to the Facebook group.

Think Yad membership is full, Weardale is close to or may now be, Harwood still has places - for those of you who want the old school pennine experience. Everybody should atleast once. Not sure about Allenheads. Council spending cuts mean road clearance has been cut back - if we do get a good dump stick to the valley roads and no you can't get to Weardale from the Teesdale side.

Seems the usual round of maintenance has been on the go. PeterS - what news from Yad?

Weather forecasts look promising for the weekend - time for the snow dances.

Forgot the websites bit:

Allenheads http://www.ski-allenheads.co.uk/

Harwood http://harwoodski.webs.com/

Weardale http://www.skiweardale.com/

Yad Moss http://www.yadmoss.co.uk/

Most of the clubs now have Facebook / Twitter although the websites and answer phones are the sources of official club info. Worth checking out before traveling as Pennine skiing has become so popular the bigger clubs may be or are members / season ticket only at the weekends. Check the membership pages for each club.

For now the only other thing to say is - thanks to the small and very hard working teams of volunteers who put in hundreds of hours throughout the year to keep the sites running and ready for the return of snow.

Spent a decent couple of hours ski touring at YM this morning. The poor weather that was forecast didn't materialise and, although thin in a couple of places, cover was pretty decent.
Felt a bit sorry for 4 boarders from Leeds - who'd driven up for 2 hours thinking it was open (said they'd read it was open on the internet Puzzled - whereas we'd read that it was closed.....) Still, they said they'd enjoyed a bit of sliding about after their hike up.

Anyway, here are a few pics:

Both Harwood (about 2miles along the B6277) from Yad Moss and Weardale ran on the 8th, lifted from the club Websites:

Harwood:

Saturday December 8th: Apologies for the e-mail this morning but didn't expect to be running today, the forecast was a few hours late. We have been open today, conditions till lunchtime were good, then the snow softened as the temperature rose. We closed at 2.00 pm as conditions were worsening, snow very soft, poor visibility and starting to rain. The forecast for tomorrow is remaining warm so the slope will be closed. It is going to turn colder next week so watch for an update next Friday. Photos from today added to gallery.

The Club's photos on the Harwood Website:
http://harwoodski.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=14279971

Weardale:

Great days skiing today with 30+ members there. F1 was very good and F2 skiable with caution but the M1 was pretty good. Sadly forecast for thaw overnight so unlikely skiing for Sunday unless the weathermen are wrong.

Allenheads:

Website reported skiing on Friday 7th and planning on Saturday depending on the weather.

Weardale and Yad Moss webcams both show cover taking a kicking this morning, looks like yesterday was an unexpected bonus day.

Hmmm.......Sunday 16 Dec and the Pennines webcams are showing:

- Weardale: No snow.
- Yad Moss: Top cam not updated since 10 Dec; Bottom cam total snow cover.

Puzzled Puzzled Puzzled Puzzled

I'm guessing that the image is an old one on the Yad Moss cam? We were all set to pile the touring gear into the car for a 75 min dash up there.....then I looked at the Weardale cams Confused.....

All the club webcams can be a bit hit and miss in terms of service but they are up on the side of a hill running off their own little generators. The clubs are usually good at repairing them once they go down but sometimes this can take time. It is though rather anoyning but it's not a quirk of Pennine Skiing, all the Scotish areas have the same with cams not being updated or on line. Although this doesn't mean I'm not going to make grumpy comments about cams in the future!

Yadmoss Bowlcam is currently showing a fair covering - so (after writing off a Scotland trip due to the 100mph winds that are forecast) all may not yet be lost for a weekend slide wink .

It's a bit frustrating with the winds, tomorrow is looking OK for west of Scotland but visibility might be ish. Yad is looking good (on the summit cam), weather radar has had the Pennines under could be rain could be snow all day. Looks like this time it was snow. If Yad has it Harwood should as well, F1 one on Weardale might be that bit too low and I cant think of a time when F2 was run without F1. So it'll be wait and see on that one.

Yad Moss hope to run on Wednesday. Its likely to be thin but fast on a well frozen grassy base. Typical Pennine conditions Laughing

http://www.yadmoss.co.uk/

We were up there on Friday replacing one of the top fences that had blown down in a southerly storm two weeks ago. We are trying out the new Cairngorm style horizontal fencing which we hope will bemore effective with a range of wind angles......not that there has been enough to drift yet Laughing

Its looking very cold but clear up there the next couple of days. snowHead

We're just back from the Yad Massif. Let's just say it was a day for die-hards. Worst conditions we've ever skied up there (we've skinned up in more snow with the skiing closed - eg see report above from 8th Dec) - but we're easily pleased and it was a long way better than a day at work Smile.

Here are a few pics - I would guess that 'Marginal snow conditions' might just about cover it:

I'm not absolutely certain whether they roam higher up the hillside but the clue may be the grey-looking things in the background on the following pic from last easter! (Can't you arrange to station the Cairngorm reindeer herd on the car park run wink?) Off piste at Yad Moss, there were certainly enough big tussocks of grass to trip you up.... Confused

mountainaddict, good effort making up there, hopefully more snow on the way from Friday!! How did it ski, did the grass slow you down compared to the snow or was it all frozen solid and find to slide on???

kitenski: By early afternoon, most of the snow had been skied off and we were skiing a dusting of snow on grass (!!). However, it skied surprisingly well without a noticeable decrease in speed. As you suspected, much of the ground was pretty well frozen - to the extent that protruding soily bits sounded like clattering over rocks, although our skis came out remarkably intact!

Fingers crossed for some snow by the weekend.

Yep, no rocks at Yad Moss and frozen 'grassy snow' skis quite well with no damage to ski bases snowHead its just a bit hard to fall on.

looks like the snow tomorrow will not reach the North Pennines and the weekend may only deliver light showers. However it remains cold so all is not lostand it could change again before tomorrow........for example we might not even get the light showers Crying or Very sad

Peter S, It's always hard to predict how far snow reaches when a front from the west tries to push into the cold from the East isn't it Peter? I seem to remember Dec 2010 had a similar setup and that eventually delivered lots of snow, fingers crossed the forecasters are wrong!!

A wee film from sky at Weardale earlier this week:

http://tyneandwear.sky.com/news/article/53076

The advantage of all the ski areas being on peat bogs is the lack of stones. Still cant decide if piste bashers or tow along mowers have been the best thing to happen to Pennine skiing. If we get a good season its only a matter of time before someone eyes up a snow cannon! I still think Allenheads - smallest tows but a ready built reservoir NehNeh

lunch time forecast was adamant that we would get our 5cm snowHead best hope now is for it to go further easterly to push the showers inland. Monday looks to be taunting us too, though I wouldn't bet against it missing the north pennines completely either.

At least The Beacons and Glenshee are getting some snowHead

Weardale Report - Sun. 20 Jan 2013:
- A light covering of new snow at Stanhope and beyond.
- Chains needed for the ski road.
- Not very busy (maybe 50 people there?)
- Minus 1C - snow light and powdery.
- Thin cover overall but enjoyable skiing (we've skied a lot thinner in the Pennines wink) .
- F1 tow a bit temperamental (had to load alternate buttons to ease the load).
- Better conditions than we had at Yad Moss midweek.
- Great day out.
- Pics below Smile.

Weardale top to bottom on Sunday Cool

http://youtube.com/v/oNMoBQsbpPk&feature=youtu.be

A lot of snow has fallen since then so it should be better by wednesday or Thursday.

Yad Moss hoping to run tomorrow though access may not be possible from the south of the B6277 and may be tricky from the north.

http://www.yadmoss.co.uk/

My guess would be that there are big drifts with large areas scoured by the wind. The bowl at the bottom may have collected some however on the easterly wind. Ii would guess the runs and the uptrack will require some snow moving around with the piste basher. snowHead

Will get a better idea from the 8am web pic tomorrow if the vis is better.

Ricklovesthepowder: The Weardale Answerphone message said they were shut today due to an adverse weather forecast (snow/wind) plus 'tow operator fatigue'.... Very Happy

Rick.....because the forecast is for 25cm and strong winds. As it turned out we could probably have opened this am....if we had any operators which we didn't. in the afternoon the snow and wind arrived.

The plan is to open tomorrow if we can get there. That message was put on the website on Thursday afternoon.

road looks difficult at the moment however :
