Ive just got back from a weeks skiing in the Grand Massif and for the first time since ive had them Ive had a few foot pain problems. I'm pretty sure this is because my skiing has got better, but whenever im skiing icy blacks or moguls im starting to get foot pain, particularly in the balls of my feet usually an intense burning sensation and a little down the outside of the foot. The boots are Salomon Evolution 9.0s,I had custom footbeds done 6 years ago and I am noticing that Im having to use the clips tighter as presumably the linings have packed out - im skiing on average two weeks a year. I can only assume its because i'm trying harder but is there any easy solution to easy the pain? Im loathe to change boots as i've had no problems with them for nearly 10 years. Help

I doubt if it's because you're trying harder, though maybe the poor fit of the boots is less of a problem when you're cruising the greens. If you've had them 10 years than at the least I should think you need new liners. See a good bootfitter!
It's also possible your feet are wearing out a bit too - maybe you need footbeds where you didn't in your younger days.

Thanks Pam - nothing like making me feel old ! I';ll have a look at the link too - it just seems that the more extreme slopes and conditions put more pressure on my feet !

well yes, they do. So poor fitting boots will be much more of a problem. But it doesn't mean that it's the skiing that's the problem.

marksovereign, one of the bootfitters will confirm but I think the painful burning sensation you get on the outside if the foot is from tight calves. You must be using your calf muscles more on steeper runs, so a good stretch after and before skiing may eliminate that pain.

The burning is on the balls of my feet usually after something steep or bumps, I'll get just a little discomfort down the sides of my feet usually after a long day

You might be clawing with your toes because your boots are a bit packed out. Thicker socks or new liners. If your boots are 10 year old you may deserve a new pair if you are a very good boy...

Keep your mind open to other possibilities. I had a similar problem. Couldn't get it sorted out. Doctor diagnosed gout. Obviously it's all that high living that I indulge in. But seriously, keep an open mind.

One of the instructors at our Gymn gets gout, I really sympathise. Its highly unlikely to be that as its only happened when skiing , thinking about it, the clawing of toes could well be a factor - maybe new liners are the way to go and get the boots assessed at the same time!

boots are 10 years old with 2 weeks a year on them so i would think it is the liner that has packed out and is no longer holding your foot, that and the fact that your skiing has probably improved over that period of time and you are wanting more form the boot.... evolution 9.0 is a lot older than 10 years BTW and at its time was a reasonable ooption although it was never very foot shaped (not much was back then) boots have got a lot better since

marksovereign... i'd say all of the above!
Boots with over 100 days on them will certainly have been squished, that in combination of your increased ability and demand on the boot.
Achey legs and feet are normal when working hard (like any excercise.... don't forget that it is a sport).
My prescription... warm ups/down... new boots (...i mean why not !?!).... then drink enough red wine to achieve gout so you can disprove it from the list!

I'll try my best to coply with the prescription! Plentiful French Red wine I can confirm does not cause gout merely the ability to ski with somebody elses legs the next morning.
Im begiining to realise that maybe it is time to have a look at new boots! Having had 10 years of comfort i am dreading the process !
